Mary Hallahan Scoones Obituary

Mary H. Scoones Jamesville - Clinton Mary Hallahan Scoones, 92, of Jamesville, died on July 1 at The Nottingham with her daughters at her side. She was born on July 8, 1913 in Buffalo, the daughter of Patrick and Mary Cummings Hallahan. After graduating from Sacred Heart Academy, Mary earned a B.S. degree in Education from Buffalo State Teachers' College. Graduate work was done there and at the University of Buffalo. She taught in the Clinton Central School District for twenty-six years and touched the lives of many young people. On September 29, 1945, Mary was married to Arthur R. Scoones in St. Thomas Acquinas Church in Buffalo. The couple lived in Clinton throughout their married life of 52 years. Mary is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary Sheila Scoones of Fayetteville, NY, Laurie and Kevin Hogan of Hamburg, NY, and Christine and Robert Zacholl of Liverpool, NY; four grandchildren, Mark and David Hogan, and Jessica and Greg Zacholl; and several nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Art in 1997; a sister, Loretta Hallahan; and a brother, Joseph Hallahan. Mary was an active parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Clinton for many years and presently a member of Holy Cross Church in DeWitt. She was a member of many organizations, including the Clinton Historical Society, the Friends of the Kirkland Town Library, the Clinton and NYS Retired Teachers Association, the Skenandoa Club in Clinton, and the Yahnundasis Club in New Hartford. She was a member of the Faxton Hospital Council, where she formerly served on the Executive Board, and she was also a founding member of the Friends of the Martin Luther Home. Mary enjoyed playing golf, reading, and especially her watercolor painting class, a more recent passion. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her family. Mary's daughters will always be grateful to the dedicated staff of The Nottingham RHCF who treated their mother with respect, dignity, and love during her weeks in their care. The funeral services will be on Friday, July 7, from the Heintz Funeral Home in Clinton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 at St. Mary's Church in Clinton. Mrs. Scoones' burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clinton. There will be no calling hours. Contributions can be made to St. Mary's Church, Marvin Street, Clinton, NY 13323.
