Richard D. Howard, 79, resident of Katherine Luther Home, Clinton, passed away May 4, 2006, at the home. Richard was born January 29, 1927, in Newton Falls, NY, son of Walter and Stella Gardner Howard. He was raised and educated in Richville, NY, and graduated high school from Holland Patent after World War II. Richard served in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, where he saw action in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1946. On May 26, 1951, at Grace Church, Utica, Richard was married to Diana Cesarone. He went on to attend Utica State Hospital, school of Nursing, graduating in 1955 as an RN. He acquired his B.S. in Nursing from Syracuse University in 1961. He retired from Utica State Hospital as Chief Nurse in 1976 and later went to work as Nursing Supervisor at Faxton Hospital, retiring in 1987. An antique buff, he devoted his full time to refinishing antique furniture. He participated in many shows, especially in Bouckville, until recently. Besides his wife, Diana, Richard is survived by two daughters, Robin James and her husband, Steven of Carmel, IN, Janice Howard of Whitesboro, NY; one son, Richard and his wife, Bonnie Howard of Glendale, AZ; three grandchildren, Ashley, Cameron, and Parker James. He also leaves a brother, Earnest Howard of N. Utica; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Howard, Lucille Howard, and Gwynne Howard Murray; a sister-in-law and her husband, Frances and Robert Harmon of N. Syracuse. He also leaves his best friends, Leo Mazur, Bob and Molly Herron, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister, Susan; and six brothers, Don, Bob, Larry, Maurice, Merritt, and Walter Jr. A funeral service for Mr. Howard will be held Sunday, May 7, 2006, at 5:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica. His burial at the convenience of the family will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be from 2 to 5 prior to his service. Mr. Howard's family would like to make a speical thank you to the Saul unit of the Katherine Luther Home and to the Edward's Ambulance Service for their immediate attention and care for Richard. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory made be to the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. Envelopes will be available.
