Obituary of Joseph P. Gabiger

Joseph P. Gabiger, 90, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at the St. Luke’s Nursing Home, with his children by his side. Joseph was born in Utica on August 13, 1928, a son of Joseph C. and Helene (Decyk) Gabiger. He was a graduate of T. R. Proctor High School and served his country in the Army and National Guard from 1944-1948. At St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Utica on August 16, 1952, he was united in marriage to Frances Gerace. Joseph owned and operated Fashion Fit Shoes in Downtown Utica for over 25 years. He loved bowling, golf, Lincoln cars and his dog, Mickey. Joseph Gabiger was a “prince among men”, always making the necessary sacrifices to make sure that family and friends were taken care of and always reaching out to those less fortunate. Joseph is survived by his children, RoseAnn and John Soukey, Joseph and Linda Gabiger and David Gabiger; four grandchildren, Joseph A. and Amra Gabiger, Victor Gabiger, Samantha Gabiger and Kaley Gabiger, a sister-in-law, Carol Gabiger, a cousin, Joanna Gabiger and many nieces and nephews in the Gabiger family that he was very close to. Joseph is predeceased by his loving wife, Frances and his brother, Harry Gabiger. He was also predeceased by and leaves behind many relatives on the Gerace side of the family. He had many happy times with them and they were all very special to him. It was Joseph’s expressed wishes that there are no calling hours or services. Entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Scott Brehaut for all his care and concern over the past few weeks.
