Ms. Josephine (Commisso) Suppa Hance, 79, of Deerfield, passed away peacefully at her home, on Sunday, May 12, 2019, with her loving family by her side. Josephine was born in Utica on February 15, 1940, the daughter of the late Joseph and Congetta (Schilingo) Commisso. Josephine was raised and educated in Utica. On May 17, 1958, in St. Anthony’s Church in Utica, Josephine joined Frank Suppa IV in marriage. A marriage that blessed Josephine and Frank with four beautiful children, a son and three daughters. Frank passed away in 1992. Later in life Josephine found happiness in marriage to Paul Hance. She embraced her Catholic faith and was a parishioner of St Mark’s Church in North Utica. For many years until her retirement, Josephine was employed as a successful sales representative with Prudential Insurance Company in Utica, winning may prestigious awards. Josephine was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was happiest spending time with her beloved family. Josephine shared a very special bond with all of her children, never faltering to show her love. She was their confidant and best friend. Known to her grandchildren as “Grandma Jo,” she blessed them with many wonderful holiday traditions. Many Christmas Eve’s were spent at Grandma Jo’s house, singing Happy Birthday to the baby Jesus, watching the dancing Santa, trying to figure out which pizza frit had sardines in it and which didn’t, and sharing in the wonderful company of family. Her grandchildren will remember her for the many summer sleepovers, which consisted of Nutty Buddies and late-night swimming with flashlights. Grandma Jo will also be remembered for her wonderful singing “We’re Here Because We’re Here” on many car rides with her grandchildren. Josephine is survived by four adoring children, Frank Suppa V and Lisa Zaniewski, Nadine and James Thomas, Michelle Suppa and Gene Tobin, and Rene Zaniewski and fiancé Don DeCarr. Josephine was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nicole and Anthony Gerardo, Maria Suppa, Francine and Ryan Phelan, Angela and Brendan Lennon, Dr. Daniele Casper and Patrick McHarris, Frank and Erin Facciolo, Joseph Facciolo and Elizabeth and Ray Doolen, 11 adored great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Josephine also leaves behind two sisters with whom she shared a wonderful relationship, Dolores Bremer and Jeanette Commisso. Josephine spent many afternoons lunching, shopping, and just spending time with her best friend Dolores. Their amazing comradery started as youngsters and remained until the very end. Josephine was predeceased by a sister, Rosemary Commisso, a brother, Dominick Commisso, and a great grandchild, Timothy Doolen. Josephine will be missed by all whose lives she touched. She will be remembered for her kind heart, beautiful smile, caring personality, her amazing ability to cook and feed people and animals in excess, even if they weren’t hungry. Most of all, Josephine will be remembered as the center of the family who provided everyone with beautiful memories and traditions. A Christian celebration of Josephine’s life will take place on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Church, 440 Keyes Rd. in North Utica. Her Rite of Committal and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Utica. There will be no public calling hours. The family would like to thank the many wonderful nurses of Hospice and Palliative Care, as well as a wonderful friend and caregiver to Josephine, Karen Hodges.
