Obituary of Shirley M. Doucet
Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ms. Shirley M. Doucet, of the Presbyterian Nursing Home, New Hartford, New York, passed away on August 20, 2016 with her loving family by her side and in the hearts of those who loved her.
Shirley was born in Barneveld, NY, on September 5, 1923, the daughter of the late Jules and Anna (Deschene) Doucet. She was predeceased by her three sisters, Julienne Elder, of Utica, Elaine Brady Cheyne, of Utica, and Rose Sharpe, of Wellington, Ohio. She was also predeceased by her brothers-in-law, Robert Elder, William Brady, James Cheyne, and Roy Sharpe. She was blessed with loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and many great-great nieces and nephews. She dearly loved them all and she will be deeply missed by each and every one of them.
Shirley graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1941. In 1945, she was hired by Charles L. Hughes to work for the Auto Club of Utica. She was then offered a position in Mr. Hughes’ Insurance Agency, which later became Hughes and Richards, Inc. After completing her coursework to become a licensed Insurance Agent, Shirley remained an employee of Hughes and Richards for 43 years, retiring in 1988.
Shirley attended St. Peters Church and was a dedicated member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed baking specialty cakes, cookies, and brownies for her family, friends, and the children of St. Peter’s school, and never missed an opportunity to donate her time and expertise to the Altar Rosary bake sales. She loved music and enjoyed sewing, composing poetry, and was a master at cake decorating and gift-wrapping. Her patience and attention to fine detail were endless, and her love for her family and friends was even greater.
Arrangements for Shirley’s funeral have been entrusted to Heintz Funeral Home, North Utica. There are no calling hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Reverend David J. Orzel on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 10:00 am at St. Peter’s Church, 422 Coventry Avenue, Utica. Her family will receive visitors at the conclusion of Mass, and interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Abraham House, 1203 Kemble Street, Utica, NY 13501, in memory of Shirley’s beloved sister, Elaine Cheyne.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the staff at Presbyterian Residential Community and all of the staff at the Presbyterian Nursing Home, especially the Aspen Unit, for their loving and wonderful care of Shirley.
