Donald L. Schaaf, 87, of Whitesboro, passed away at home on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Donald was born in Utica on July 3, 1929, a son of the late Ernest and Helen (Brennan) Schaaf and received his education in the Whitesboro School System. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later served in the Army National Guard. Donald married Marilyn Murphy at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica on May 31, 1954, a blessed union of 62 years. For 43 years until his retirement in 1992 Donald was employed with Kelsey Hayes. He was a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Donald is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn, his 9 children, Cathy Knapp, Schuyler, Colleen Schaaf, Whitesboro, Susan (Thomas) Knapp, Whitesboro, Donald (Roberta) Schaaf, Yaphank, Long Island, NY, Patrick (Suzanne) Schaaf, Utica, Marilyn (Nicholas) Swertfager, Charlotte, NC, Shelia Collver, Whitesboro, William (Mary Ann) Schaaf, Yorkville, and Bridget (Robert) Wenner, Deerfield. He is also survived by 29 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and several in-laws, nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by his sister. Lois Parda, his twin brother, Douglas Schaaf , his brother, Kenneth Schaaf, and his son-in-law, Michael W. Knapp, Sr. Mr. Schaaf's funeral with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 11:00 from Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will take place in the West Schuyler Cemetery. Calling hours at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica are Friday from 4-7. Those so wishing may make donations to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Donald's memory.
