Mrs. Pauline S. Schaaf, 91, of Whitesboro, passed away on Friday, December 25, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. Pauline was born in Utica, on March 19, 1929, the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Kadlubowski) Szczerba. She was raised and educated in Utica, was a graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School and Utica School of Commerce. On May 2, 1953, Pauline was united in marriage with Douglas F. Schaaf at Sacred Heart Church in Utica, a devoted union of 61 years until Douglas’ death in 2014. At one time, Pauline was employed with the NY State Department of Transportation, Canal Division. She was a longtime parishioner of the former Sacred Heart Church in Utica and most recently a parishioner of the Church of The Sacred Heart and Saint Mary Our lady of Czestochowa in NY Mills. Pauline enjoyed traveling with her husband Douglas, was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and especially loved spending time with her beloved family, who were the joy of her life. Mrs. Schaaf is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Karen and Robert Pettigrew of NY Mills and Linda Metzler of Remsen; one son, Thomas Schaaf of N. Utica; five cherished grandchildren, Allison and David Vore of New Hartford, Erin and Paul Muzio of Remsen, Nicole and Nicholas Gudyka of Vernon, Jeffrey Pettigrew of Rochester and Kelly Pettigrew and Kristofer Martinelli of NY Mills; three adored great grandchildren, Cadence, Weston and Natalie; brother-in-law, Donald Parda of Deansboro, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Andrew and Mary, husband, Douglas, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ernest and Helen Schaaf, son-in-law, Richard J. Metzler, III, Thomas’ longtime companion, Laura Bradley and in-laws, Kenneth and Betty Schaaf, Donald and Marilyn Schaaf and Lois Parda Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private funeral will be held. Mrs. Schaaf’s interment will be in Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyrs Cemetery in Whitesboro. A celebration of Pauline’s life will be held at a later date when circumstances permit.
