Marie C. Holmes, 95, of Utica passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021. Marie was born in Clinton, NY on February 21, 1925, the daughter of Filippe and Maria (Papparella) Lena. Marie was united in marriage to George R. Holmes in Utica on July 4, 1946. The couple was united for 40 years until George’s death in 1986. Marie was employed with Vyners Drug Store and later Pharmacy Solutions, owned by the Slater family, until her retirement in 2006. Marie was a lifelong Yankees fan who always wanted to meet Derek Jeter. She also loved the music of Frank Sinatra; in her eyes no other music compared to “Ole’ Blue Eyes”. Marie was predeceased by her parents, Filippe and Maria (Papparella) Lena; her in-laws, Earl and Hazel Holmes; and her lifelong childhood friend, Antoinette Klenotiz. Marie always held close to her heart her two children, son, Philip, and daughter, Annette, whom she cared for and loved unconditionally until their passing. Marie is survived by her four children: Carl (Cassandra) Holmes, Rome; George (Karen) Holmes, Marcy; Mary Holmes of Utica and her significant other, Rocco DeRollo; and David (Lisa) Holmes, New Hartford. Marie is also survived by thirteen grandchildren: Carl Holmes, Jr. and fiancée Maria; Mark Holmes; Gregory (Rebecca) Holmes; Geordan Holmes; Jyllian Holmes; Kelly Holmes; Nicholas Holmes; John Holmes; Toni (Steve) Fitzgerald; Melissa (Joseph) Coffay; Matthew Holmes; Brandon Holmes; and Madison Holmes. Marie leaves behind nine great-grandchildren: Mark Holmes, Jr.; Aiden Holmes; Bryce Holmes; Harper Holmes; Austin Zawada; Brianna Zawada; Devin Zawada; Karina Coffay; and Kellan Coffay. Dear friends, Cheryl Mondi, Robert Klenotiz, and Helen Fountain, always found time to visit her. Mrs. Holmes’ funeral will be held on Friday, January 15, 2021. Calling hours will be held Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:45 at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica. Masks must be worn; social distancing and contact tracing will be implemented. Marie’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Friday morning at 11:30 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Those so wishing may make donations to the Residents General Account at The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Utica. A special thank you to daughter-in-law, Lisa Holmes, who was by her side, professionally and personally, during her time at the Grand and especially in her final days.
