Obituary of Edward E. Petroski
Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edward E. Petroski, 87, of Utica, NY, passed peacefully into Heaven on January 5, 2021.
He was born on April 18, 1933, in Schenectady, NY, the son of Edward and Jane (Grosky) Petroski. He attended Holy Trinity grammar school then spent his high school years at UFA, graduating in 1950. Upon graduation he attended Utica College until he was drafted during the Korean War into the Army (Signal Corps Division). He served as a Camera Repairman and Photographer and was discharged in 1955 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
On October 20, 1956, Ed and Josephine (Olko) were married at St. John’s Church in Newport, NY, and were blessed to have 64 happy and loving years together.
Ed was employed by the New York Telephone Company for 34 years, started out by climbing telephone poles and then with time he transitioned to management. He retired in 1989 at the young age of 56, so he could spend more time with his family, at his camp on Hinckley Lake, and taking pictures and collecting cameras. For many years Ed enjoyed adding to his collection by attending Knapp Auctions or garage sales, or anywhere he could find an old camera. Ed was parishioner at St. Peter’s Church in Utica, and also a member of the Telephone Company Pioneers and the Oneida County American Legion.
At an early age Ed showed he had an eye for photography and that became a lifelong hobby he also shared with his wife and daughters. Whether he was using a 35 mm or large format camera, he showed time and again he was a very skilled photographer, especially when using black and white medium. He was an active member of the Utica Camera Club for over 30 years. Ed competed in local and national competitions and won many photography awards and was published for his outstanding work.
Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Surviving are his wife, Jo; his daughters, Cynthia (Wayne) Ellis and Dianne (Vincent) Amuso; his precious grandchildren, Andrea, Kaity (Blaise), Vinny (Cali), Tommy, Paul and great granddaughter, Vivienne Rose. Also surviving are his sister, Elizabeth (Raymond) Herubin and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Raymond.
Ed’s family would like to thank the heroes at Valley Crest, especially Kelly (and her mom, Jackie), Lisa White, Deb Brockway, Jamie and Helping Hands for all their support.
Ed was a kind, compassionate, fun, loving, gentle man who loved us unconditionally and taught us so many life lessons. He has given us this incredible gift of so many memories, and he will forever live in our hearts.
Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ed’s name to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P. O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014.
