Obituary of Phylis J. Slater

Mrs. Phylis J. Slater, 88, a resident of the St. Luke’s Home in New Hartford, formerly of Coventry Ave., N. Utica, passed away on Monday March 8, 2021 at the nursing home with her loving family by her side.
Phylis was born in Gloversville, NY, on June 19, 1932, the daughter of Edward and Florence (Campbell) Hample. She was raised in Gloversville, was a graduate of Gloversville High School, and earned an associates degree in food service management from SUNY Cobleskill. On April 13, 1951, Phylis was united in marriage with Carl J. Slater, a devoted union of 25 years, until Carl’s death in 1976. For many years, Phylis was employed as food service manager with SUNY Cobleskill, retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Marcy Seniors, Maynard United Methodist Church, Ladies in Mission at Maynard Church, and a former member of the Richmondville Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Phylis was an avid reader and shopper, enjoyed playing cards, especially pitch, and loved traveling to Cape Cod every summer.
Mrs. Slater is survived by her daughter, Lori Scott of N. Utica; her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Maureen Slater of Bluffton, SC; one cherished granddaughter, Shannon Scott and Matthew Jennings of N. Utica; two adored great grandchildren, Riley Jennings and Emma Jennings; one niece, Debbie Ulrich and two nephews, Gary and Colleen Ulrich and David and Robin Ulrich. She was predeceased by her brother, Dale Hample and sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and Gerhard Ulrich.
Visitation for family and friends is Friday, March 12, 2021 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica, followed by a funeral service at 4:00 p.m. at the conclusion of visitation. Face coverings are required and social distancing and contact tracing protocols must be observed. Phylis will be laid to rest, with her husband Carl, at Cobleskill Rural Cemetery in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Phylis’ memory, to Maynard United Methodist Church, PO Box 431 Marcy, NY 13403.
