Mr. John “Jack” B. McCarthy, 86, of Utica, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May, 17, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, with his loving family by his side. John was born in Utica, on September 13, 1934, the son of Dennis and Doris (Banker) McCarthy. He was raised and educated in Utica and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. Jack proudly served in the US Army from 1957-1959. On February 23, 1957, Jack was united in Marriage with Carol A. Gossin at St. Francis de Sales Church in Utica, a loving union of 53 years, until Carol’s death in 2010. For many years, Jack was the superintendent of St. Agnes Cemetery in Utica, where he made many lifelong friends. He was a former member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Utica, until its closure, and a current parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Utica. Jack was an avid collector, enjoyed restoring old cars, was a member of NAWCC and especially loved spending summers at his family camp on Kayuta Lake. Mr. McCarthy is survived by his seven children, Mary Cahill of Deerfield, Dennis and Denise McCarthy of Norwich, Clare and Kyle Burth of New Hartford, Bridget Korrie of Kayuta Lake, Michael and Kristina McCarthy of Liverpool, Patricia and David Hauser of Williamson, NY and Kathleen McCarthy and Scott Murdock of Rochester; 12 cherished grandchildren, Maren and Jason Schenandoah, Sean McCarthy, Brett Korrie, Devin and Katlin Korrie, Colleen Burth, Sara Korrie, Sloan Jack, Shannon Burth, Erin McCarthy, Evan McCarthy, Maura Potter and Dylan Hauser; two adored great grandchildren, Gerald and Artio; two sisters, Joanne Ritchie of Camillus and Kay Lupia of Rochester; one brother, Edward McCarthy of Utica; in-laws, Edward “Buddy” and Mary Mulchy of Alex Bay, NY, Timothy and Mary Mulchy of Altamont, NY and Francine Mulchy of Utica, as well as several nieces, nephews and his canine companion, Griffin. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Dennis Cahill, and in-laws, Harry Ritchie, Dick Lupia, Jean McCarthy, Thomas Mulchy and Kathleen Mulchay. Mr. McCarthy’s funeral will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at Our lady of Lourdes Church, where his Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. His Rite of Committal and burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Utica. Calling hours for family and friends are Thursday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica.
