Obituary of Harry V. Kaelin

Mr. Harry V. Kaelin, 86, of N. Utica, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare in New Hartford, with his loving family by his side.
Harry was born in Utica on July 7, 1934, the son of James A. and Rela (Cullen) Kaelin. He was raised and educated in Utica and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. After graduation, Harry proudly enlisted in the US Navy, serving aboard the USS Arcadia AD 23. On June 13, 1959, Harry was united in marriage with Bernice H. Kowiatek at St. Stanislaus Church in Utica, a loving and devoted union of 61 years. For 37 years, Harry was employed with General Electric Company in Utica, retiring in 1993. He was a parishioner of St. Mark’s Church in N. Utica, a founding member of Flub Dub Club, that spanned 63 years, a member of American Legion Utica Post 229, N. Utica and enjoyed visiting the American Legion post in Sylvan Beach, where he and Bernice where always graciously welcomed. Harry was also an avid hunter and loved camping in Old Forge and more recently, the Thousand Islands. Family was very important to Harry and he anxiously looked forward to the annual Kaelin Klan family reunion on the first Sunday in August at Cedar Lake.
Mr. Kaelin is survived by his beloved wife, Bernice; two daughters and one son-in-law, Patricia and David Piperata of N. Utica and Sharon Kaelin of N. Utica; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Beth Kaelin of Fayetteville, NY; six cherished grandchildren, Michele Adams and her husband, Brian, David Piperata, II, Joshua Zdanowicz, Amanda Zdanowicz, Jessica Zdanowicz, and McKenzie Kaelin and two step grandchildren, Alexis Birkmier and her husband, Dave and Tess Bible; three adored great grandchildren, Kaylee, Ahneka and Leviathan and one step great grandson, Logan; one brother and three sisters-in-law, Robert and Barbara Kaelin of N. Utica, Jean Kaelin of PA and Mary Ellen Kowiatek of N. Utica, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and three brothers, Jack, James and William Kaelin.
Mr. Kaelin’s funeral will be held on Friday, June 4, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Church 440 Keyes Rd., N. Utica, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. His Rite of Committal and burial will be in St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyrs Cemetery in Whitesboro. Visitation for family and friends is Thursday, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Operation Sunshine, 221 Oriskany St., E., Utica, NY 13501 in Harry’s memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
