Maureen Barcza posted a condolence

I felt a deep loss upon hearing that our dear friend, Jim, had left this world to join his beloved, Dutchie, in another. I feel heartache for his family and friends, among them, me and my family. For Jim, however, who I believe is now at peace and thoroughly, once again, enjoying the company of Dutchie and those cherished friends who departed before him, my heart’s chambers are animated once again, filled by solace. His former partner in crime, “Barcza”, my beloved Bob, had, months earlier, safely backed the Shasta onto a favorite site in the heavens, and my reverie of their antics brings a wide smile to my face.
I have no doubt, Jim was greeted above with open arms, bated breath, and a Celtic tune. Dutchie, Barcza, and the gang had the site reserved, the Merrimac positioned, cherished tarps and ropes carefully unfolded and launched into the trees. The kindling was gathered. The eternal campfire lit, and hot coffee steadied over the embers.
Jim enjoyed presiding over his willing, mosquito-bitten subjects. He directed our gaggle of minions in their never-ending search for twigs and other flame-inducing materials. His precise maintenance of the wood supply could border on authoritarianism, but the bold, steady flames his patrol ensured, allowed endless, engaging tales of the Ogre of Brown Tract Pond. His stories never failed to hold the gaze of adoring children, bathed in Deep Woods Off, perpetually sticky from too many s’mores.
Jim had been the ultimate supervisor of hikes, and captain of the Sunfish. We all remember his sailing lessons with the kids, on the vessel we lovingly referred to as Jim's "styrofoam cooler with a sail." Late night campfire sessions were to be held regardless of weather, and Jim was our humming, whistling, singing conductor. I remember one Sunday morning, three or four campsites’ of us, all sitting together in church, hair combed, but unbathed, when it dawned on all of us, all at once... our collective “stink” of smoke and bug spray could very well have extended to the heavens! Later that night, (now forbidden and frowned upon!) soapy scrubs and soaks in the lake would take place, our nakedness obscured by the total darkness, but our laughter amplified and echoed by the still cold, water.
Since Jim departed, my mind has turned back to those hot summer days, watching Big Mike lug yet another case of Pepsi cans from his trunk, while Barcza and Big Jim boiled water for spaghetti on the old Coleman, kids running around on a sugar high, throwing sticky pine cones at each other. They were crazy, fun times that I believe all of us would re-live again and again, if given the chance. And then Jim, maybe even just once, would have been right when he insisted, "those storm clouds are gonna burn off!" I think the circumstances back then brought out the “child” in most of us adults, filling us with stories and memories that would be recounted and repeated for decades (even those stories we all once agreed would best be left untold!).
Bob and I were grateful to have “found” Jim and Dutchie on our second ever camping trip. They taught us "the ropes," and introduced us to their fun-loving family and friends. I think Jim loved the story Bob always told about spotting the Merrimac on an adjacent site and being astonished as the occupants emerged in a seemingly unending parade. Bob was amazed when Jim proudly showed him how he had revamped that small space to fit six people! He was an incredibly smart and resourceful man. Each year we looked forward to seeing the improvements he had made during the “off” season.
For the Barcza family, the wonderful summer months spent together at Brown Tract will forever be treasured. Over the years, Bob and I loved those occasional afternoons when Jim and Dutchie would suddenly show up at our home in Syracuse, during one of their Sunday drives. Over cold drinks and a scattered meal, we laughed, revisiting those crazy days. Memories tucked deep within us now, but retold and re-experienced so often, they will surely live on through all of us who had the pleasure of being in any way involved with Jim.
With love and deepest sympathy, we share in your loss,
Maureen and family... Scott, Lisa, Braeden, and Rylee Barcza, and Ken, Lauren, Hayden, and Beckett Holmes

There were some really good times with Jim and Dutchie, when we were younger we did so many things together. The beer parties, playing cards and seeing our kids grow up. As we got older, we went out to dinner a lot, Jim,Dutch, Larry, Judy and Rog and me. We took great joy in celebrating our 50th anniversaries together with a dinner out. Good Times!!!
