We are so very sorry to hear of Gene’s passing. He was a wonderful, kind person throughout his entire life and we’re blessed to have known him and to have him as a neighbor for years. He always greeted us with a big smile on his face. He was always willing to take the time to stop and say hello, inform us if he got our family’s mail by mistake and let us pet and admire his beautiful dogs that he loved so dearly. It’s so sad going by his house and knowing that he’s gone. Our condolences and prayers go out to his entire family. May you RIP Gene. You are missed. Joanne and Randy Astalfa

My condolences to the family and loved ones of Gene Hughes.
Gene was a great Supervisor in the Advocacy Utica department of RCIL and I enjoyed working with him.
His dedication to the cause of Advocating to those in need was admirable. He will be truly missed by many he worked with, and those in the community he assisted.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Patterson-Moyer

To the Hughes family:
We all know what Gene had to endure in life. But it came as no surprise that Gene made the most of his life despite the obstacles. To know Gene was to understand the gentle soul that he had. As a fierce competitor growing up I have a strong feeling that Gene is currently running for a touchdown on the football field of heaven with his parents and nephew applauding from the sidelines. Great job my friend
REST IN PEACE

The United Way of the Mohawk Valley mourns Gene's passing as he was a passionate and dedicated volunteer for many years with us assuring donor's dollars were distributed to where they were most needed. A great and caring man, for sure, who lived to help others without regard to his own special needs.

Sending my deepest condolences to Lisa ,and Gene’s family and friends. I met Gene in 1983. It was my rookie year as a PT and I guess in retrospect it was Gene’s rookie year as well. Gene taught me more than any professor ever could. And those who know Gene must agree he was not gonna be a “textbook” case. Gene and I learned a lot together as rookies for example that the physics of transferring his over 6 foot football frame into car may require more than just us… we persevered as calling for assistance on a cell phone was not a choice. Gene was an inspiration and I feel blessed to have witnessed his mental strength, enduring fortitude, unbridled honesty and unrelenting quick wit. Underneath that big burly guy exterior was a kind gentle man… you will be missed but not forgotten. Rest In Peace dear friend.

Gene's RCIL Advocacy staff will remember him with affection and respect. He was both teacher and student; a fierce defender of disability rights, and a generous hearted leader.
We will always remember him with joy.

Throughout the 1980s, I'd see Gene several times a week when I patronized the Sheraton Hotel lounge (where he worked). Every time I saw him we'd exchange a smile and nod, and a brief conversation. He was a great guy. RIP my friend.

Words cannot explain how much he will be missed. A great man, role model for advocacy, and a keen perspective to see all sides of a situation. Loved his humor, his laugh, and the comfort and ease you felt in his company. He had the characteristics of a true leader, fair and understanding. He was truly one of a kind and has touched all of our lives in some way or another.
