Obituary of Mary H. Schmitt

Mrs. Mary H. Schmitt, 94, of Utica, passed away on Friday, September 17, 2021 at Utica Rehab and Nursing in Utica.
Mary was born in Utica, on September 12, 1927, the daughter of Norbert and Rosella (Wagner) Graf and received her education in Utica schools. On October 20, 1951, Mary was united in marriage with Joseph A. Schmitt, at St. Joseph’s Church in Utica, a loving and devoted union of 63 years, until Joseph’s death in 2015. For many years, Mary was employed with St. Luke’s Hospital in New Hartford and at one time, was the weekend cook at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church rectory. She was a devout parishioner of St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church, a member of the Secular Franciscan Order, a 78 years member of St. Mary’s Auxiliary #156 and a dedicated volunteer with Mother Marianne’s West Side Kitchen. Mary enjoyed bingo, crocheting, and along with her sister Elizabeth, crocheted thousands of lap blankets, that they lovingly donated to aids babies and local veterans.
Mrs. Schmitt is survived by her five sons, Edward Schmitt, George Schmitt, Robert Schmitt, Richard Schmitt and Joseph F. Schmitt, all of Utica; two sisters-in-law, Catherine Graf of Utica and Florida and Mary Magurno of Florida, as well as nieces, nephews and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Graf and sister, Elizabeth Graf.
Mrs. Schmitt’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at 9:15 a.m. from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and 10:00 at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church, where her Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Her Rite of Committal and burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Yorkville. Visitation for family and friends is Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. The Knights of St. John’s Ladies Auxiliary will offer a ritualistic service, on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
