Obituary of Edward James Cooney
Edward James Cooney, 81, passed peacefully with family at his side on Friday, 24 September 2021 at the Magnolia House of Sitrin Healthcare Center. He was born 12 July 1940 in Whitesboro, New York to the late Andrew Carl and Geraldine (Bush) Cooney. One of nine children, he attended parochial elementary school at St. Joseph/St. Patrick’s Catholic school. Later he graduated from Whitesboro High School and attended evening classes in the Utica College Evening Division prior to marriage. Edward married Janice Roman Cooney on 16 September 1961 at Our Lady of the Rosary Church on Burrstone Road, New Hartford. He joins his wife in death, after Janice’s death on 21 February 2017, and fifty-six years of marriage. Edward was employed by Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation for thirty-five years, retiring as a Supervisor at Harbor Point in Utica. He enjoyed his long career and upon retirement continued working as a Construction Manager for Mastec Corporation in Rotterdam, New York. After five years, Edward fully retired living at home in Deerfield, New York and at their condominium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Here, Edward and Janice enjoyed the company of many good friends and family and their cat, Snickers O’Malley. He also took time to travel abroad and throughout the United States, touring the U.S. National Parks. Edward was sure to enjoy his retirement to the fullest. Edward is survived by his four children: Michael J. Cooney and wife Elizabeth, of Virginia, with their children Paul, Andrew, and Grace. His daughters Catherine Cooney of Deerfield and Jennifer Cooney of New York, New York. And Robert E. Cooney and his wife Margaret, of California, with their daughter Antonia. Edward leaves one sister, Frances Hock of Whitesboro, and two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law - Howard Roman of Leesburg, Virginia and Ronald (Elaine) Roman of New York Mills, New York. He leaves many nieces and nephews, whom he loved and enjoyed throughout his life. Edward was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, a member of L.U. 310 Retirement Club, the Hibernians of America, and Niagara Mohawk 25 Year Club. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, New Hartford, on Friday 1 October 2021 at 11a.m. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the mass and internment will take place at Holy Trinity Cemetery beside his wife, Janice, privately at the convenience of the family. The family would like to thank all the caregivers of Sitrin Healthcare Facility, especially Magnolia House, for their continuing concern and care during his time there.
