We attended St. Francis de Sales Church many years ago where Father O’Neill was priest. We will forever keep him close at heart. He was one of a kind, a true gentle, caring soul.

Father O'Neill has guided us through years of joyous occasions and family tragedies, always with that steady and gentle voice we will all miss so much. We'll always cherish his stories and inspirational Homilies that he was gifted in reciting and know now he is in Heaven for eternity with all who have passed before us. Peace & prayers to all.

I don't know of any other priest that was more Christ like than Father O'Neill. RIght from the first time he councelled my brother and brought him up out of his pit to the last time I talked with him and he did the same for me...there was no one more loving than him and always available no matter what. I doubt it would be possible to count the number of people he helped and that loved him. Such a pure, gentle spirit....He will be so sorely missed. You could always depend on him without fail. My deepest condolences to his family and closest friends.

My first memory of Fr. O’Neill was when he came to our home on Gold Street to visit my grandma. I was between five and seven, opened the door and let him in. Later on, he transferred away from St. Francis de Sales.
Jump forward to my junior/senior year at De Sales High School when Fr. O’Neill returned as pastor. At that same time, I was working at the parish rectory – counting the collections on Sunday morning, returning Sunday night, as well as two or three other nights during the week, to answer the phone and make our Mass Cards.
Fr. O’Neill created a family-like atmosphere for the rectory family, and I got to be that kid sister everyone always picked on. Those years at the rectory turned out to be the greatest gift I ever received.
In 1979, I moved from Utica to Syracuse and had lost touch with Frs.O’Neill and Cannan but remained in touch with Fr. John Schopfer. Every once in awhile when we spoke, Fr. Schopfer would encourage me to get back in touch with Fr. O’Neill and said Fr. O’Neill love to hear from me. So, one day when I was sitting in my NYC apartment, I called him …
When he picked up the phone, I said, “Hi Father, it’s Marion and he enthusiastically responded “Marion, you sound just the same. I very happily said, “Gee thanks, Father!!” And then it happened – I was that kid sister back in the rectory as he replied, “No improvement whatsoever!” I got so made at myself, I just couldn’t believe I walked right into his trap.” As the kid sister, I should have known better.
We stayed in touch over the years, and he became one of my best friends, counselor, and my personal rock. Whenever I felt like I was falling off a cliff and he always brought me back to solid ground. I don’t remember what he said or how he said it, but it always worked.
I will be eternally grateful that I got to be part of his life and he got to be part of mine.
Fr. O’Neill, thank you for everything! I will always remember you and all the good times, the laughter and your loving, generous spirit. I know you will always be by my side just like you were on earth. Until we meet again, say Hi to my Mom, Dad and Gerrie for me.
Rest in Peace.
