Obituary of James S. Lindsey
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James Stewart Lindsey, 89, passed away on May 22 in Utica, New York. Mr. Lindsey was a lifelong resident of greater Utica; he was born in Faxton Hospital, grew up in Whitesboro, was married in Utica, and raised his four children in Deerfield. James, son of Cyril Lindsey and Mary Moran, was born in Utica on February 21, 1927. He had three brothers - Terrence, Carey, and Ronald, and attended Whitesboro High School. At the age of 18, Jim left New York to join the United States Navy. From 1944 to 1946, he was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida where he served as an aerial gunner for the Naval Air Force. Jim and his wife of over 60 years, Carrie (née Coppola), were married on September 25, 1954 in Utica’s St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church. They raised four children at their Deerfield home. In 1966, Jim graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He was an active member of the community and supported his children throughout their upbringing as coach of the North Utica Little League Tigers, as a high school lacrosse, wrestling, baseball and football fan, and as a ski enthusiast. Jim worked for Faxton Hospital in the laboratory and later at Winthrop Drugs, where he retired in 1986. He was a member of the North Utica Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus, and he served on the Whitesboro School Board from 1967–1977, where he was President from 1972–1974. When the kids were little, Jim would put them into their metallic sky blue Ford Falcon with the tailgate down and cruise down Walker Road to Donalty’s Pub, where the kids would share Cokes in a bottle with paper straws and pretzel sticks. Jim would grab a Utica Club and limburger cheese sandwich; they enjoyed this ritual, and looked forward to it since “it was on the way to the post office.” Jim was a lifelong sports lover and enjoyed spending icy mornings skiing at McCauley Mountain and warm afternoons on the Honey Hills golf course. Jim adored the time he spent with his grandchildren, who fondly remember his seasonally appropriate jokes, morning donut runs, root beer floats, and evening walks around his neighborhood. He was kind and patient with all of his grandchildren, especially when: Kendra insisted they watch Warren Miller videos for the 20th time; Emily asked countless questions testing his quick wit; Claire, his favorite barber under age 6, did his hair; Erin tinkered through his ship-in-a-bottle collection; Patrick learned his secrets to a strong round of golf; and every time Ella fell down the ravine, he was there to help her out. Jim will be remembered by all those he shared time with as the beloved husband of Carrie, brother of Carey Lindsey and wife Jennifer Lindsey, Terrence Lindsey and wife Barbara Lindsey, and Ronald Lindsey (deceased), and loving father of Mary Antoinette Lindsey of Dallas, TX, Carole Beth Cobb and husband Vaughn Cobb of Honeoye Falls, NY, James Stewart Lindsey, Jr. of Niskayuna, NY, and Patrick Lindsey of Washington, MA. In addition to Jim’s many nieces, nephews, sister in-laws, brother in-laws, and many great friends, he will be especially missed by his six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Kendra Renee Rossetti and husband Lou, Emily Anne Lindsey, Claire Ellen Lindsey, Erin Lindsey Cobb, Patrick James Stewart Lindsey, Ella Rhianne Cobb, Owen Rossetti, and Mason Rossetti. Jim and his family would like to thank the entire staff of Utica’s Masonic Care Community, especially the Saranac wing staff, for the attentive care and compassion they showed him during his time there. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 10:00 am at Historic Old St. John's Church on Bleecker Street in Utica, NY. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the St. John's Food Bank at 240 Bleecker St., Utica, NY 13501.
