Raymond “Randy” J. Gates Jr., 79, passed away at his home on Saturday December 11, 2021. He was born on August 30, 1942 in Utica, NY the son of Raymond and Lilian (Reinhardt) Gates Sr. Randy graduated Whitesboro Sr. High School class of 1960. He was a proud to have achieved the designation of Eagle Scout during his time participating in the Scouts. After graduation he enlisted with the US Air Force and after serving his country received an Honorable Discharge. He was united in marriage to the former Carolyn Owens on December 5, 1964 at St. Peter’s Church in North Utica. Mrs. Gates predeceased him on June 26, 2021 after 57 years of marriage. He attended trade school for plumbing and heating and joined the Steam Fitters Union. He was a second-generation employee for H. J. Brandeles Mechanical Contractors of Utica. Mr. Gates was a member of American Legion Post #161 of Holland Patent and the local Model T Club having owned several of the antique vehicles that he took great pride in. He was also a licensed Pilot and enjoyed flying the custom aircraft he built himself. Randy was an original member of the Steuben Striders running club and involved with many others. His passion for running resulted in contribution to the Boilermaker Road race as one of the creators of the original course layout. He was also responsible for developing the America’s Greatest Heart Run and the once beloved New Year’s Day Hangover Run. Randy is survived by his children and their spouses; Son Raymond and Annette Gates III of Remsen, Daughters Kelly and Edward Stevens of Floyd, Heidi and Todd Mogensen of Westernville, Peggy and Scott Koenig of Floyd, two sisters Joan Potterton, FL, Cyndi Gates, Clark Mills, 12 Grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Gail Kehl. He is remembered by numerous special friends who he beloved greatly. In keeping with Randy’s wishes there will be no visitation or services at this time.
