Thomas G. Nelson (Tommy), 59, passed away at his home on Friday, January 7, 2022 after a brief illness. Tommy was born on March 25, 1962 in Utica, New York to Frank and Eileen Rooney Nelson. In addition to his parents, he leaves his sisters, Carleen Madden (Chris) and Susan Hughes (Brendan), his brothers Edward Nelson (Walid) and William Nelson (Lori) and many loving nieces and nephews. Tommy attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1980. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 34 years until his retirement in 2019. He cherished the many friendships he had from his days there. He was an avid sports follower and was proud to be a lifelong Detroit Lions and New York Yankees fan. He was also a hockey enthusiast and particularly loved attending Utica Comets games with his cousin, Bill Owens. Tommy took great joy in the renovation of his house and relished creating a comfortable home where he could, in his own words, "just relax for a while." He was especially devoted to the care of his father in the past few years and has been a great comfort to his mother as well. Although he will be forever remembered for his quick wit and bargain hunting skills, it’s his dedication to his parents that will shine above the rest. He stepped up when he was needed and it is the remembrance of that love and dedication that will endure in the hearts of everyone he knew. In keeping with Tommy's wishes, there will be no calling hours and a memorial mass will be held at a future date.
