Obituary of Michael J. Schreck

    Mr. Michael J. Schreck, 65, of Utica, passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, with his loving family by his side.

     Michael was born in Utica, on February 21, 1957, the son of John (Jack) H. and Fayann (Hall) Schreck.  He was raised in Utica and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy.  On September 16, 1978, Michael was united in marriage with Debra J. Gagnon, at Sacred Heart Church in Utica.  For many years, Michael was employed with Marcy Psychiatric Center, and most recently, as a Correctional Officer with Midstate Correctional Facility until his retirement.  He was an avid Golfer, hockey fan and enjoyed camping.  Michael was also an active volunteer with various organizations, including; the Utica Boilermaker, American Greatest Heart Run and Walk, the Herkimer County Fair, Ride for Missing and Exploited Children and Utica Comets Hockey.  He was a dedicated member of the Knights of St. John in Utica, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Midstate Chapter of the Emerald Society, Old Erie Golf Course and St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church, Utica.

     Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Debra; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Denise and Steve Smith and Kimberly and Tony Lanza; one brother, Jeffrey Schreck; his adored nieces and nephews who he loved as his own children, Vanessa and Jesse Winch, David Secor, Anthony Lanza, Joshua and Erin Gagnon, Derek Secor, Joseph and Rachael Lanza, Matthew Schreck, Tiffany and Craig Sestir, Russell Schreck, Justin Gagnon, Jestyna, Crystal and Bryan; his Goddaughter, Tia; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Cynthia Gagnon; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Naomi Gagnon and Connie Ortiz and three uncles, John Buczek, Ron and Clare Schreck and Robert Schreck; Also surviving are the Men’s Thursday Night Group, Old Erie Golf friends and family, and the Utica Comets family, as well as many great nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents, John and Fayann Schreck and brother, Richard Schreck.

     Visitation for family and friends is Sunday, (today) May 1, 2022 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica. Face coverings are optional for those who wish to wear one.   

      A private funeral will take place at the convenience of the family, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Whitesboro.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Old Erie Youth Camp, C/O Old Erie Golf Course, 3387 Forest Corners Rd., Durhamville, NY 13054 or Anita’s Stevens Swan Humane Society, 5664 Horatio St., Utica, NY 13502.
