Obituary of Patricia Dugan
Please share a memory of Patricia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Patricia M. Dugan, 91, formerly of Clinton, died March 31, 2016, at Acacia Village, where she had lived for the past 18 months.
Born March 23, 1925 in The Bronx, NY, Pat was the daughter of two Irish immigrants: Dublin native Joseph A. Fox and Ellen (Nellie) Dooley Fox from Rosbercon, County Kilkenny. For all her life, Pat was proud of her Bronx roots and her Irish heritage.
Pat graduated from Cathedral High School in New York City in 1942. Her last trip to her hometown was to attend her 70th high school reunion in 2012. After graduating from Hunter College of the City of New York in 1946 with a degree in accounting/economics, she worked for Townsend-Skinner Company, publisher of information on economic trends. She was active in Young Christian Students, Young Christian Workers, and the New York Gaelic Society, where she learned Irish and met her future husband, Frank Gale Dugan Jr. They were married on September 6, 1948, in Holy Cross Church, The Bronx, with her brother, the Rev. Kevin F. Fox, OFM, officiating. Her husband died in 1996, shortly after their 48th wedding anniversary.
The Dugans moved to the Mohawk Valley in 1956, settling first in Rome, then moving to Clinton in 1973. Together with Jim O’Looney, they founded the local chapter of Comhaltas Ceoltiori Eireann (the Association of Irish Musicians). The Little Musical Branch, as it was known, is now called the Dugan Branch, in honor of Pat and her husband. Pat was the Irish Language Officer in North America for Comhaltas for many years. In 2011, the Ancient Order of Hibernians presented Pat, and her husband posthumously, with the James Agen/Raymond Durr Spirit of Irish Award. She also was honored by the Irish government for her work to have Irish Gaelic recognized as an official language of the European Union.
Pat received her Masters of Library Science degree from Syracuse University in 1964. She worked for the Mid-York Library System, serving as a librarian on the Bookmobile. She also was a school librarian for Camden Middle School before joining the staff at the Utica College Library in 1968. She retired as Assistant Director of the Library in 1987. She then worked at the library of the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory for several years before retiring permanently in 1994.
Pat and her husband made many trips to Ireland and spent a semester there on sabbatical in 1980. They were active in numerous endeavors involving Irish culture, including teaching Irish language classes at several locations in Utica and the Syracuse area. She was still offering Irish lessons in her home until shortly before her death. She was also a member of the Newman Community at Utica College.
Pat carried out her lifelong commitment to social justice through her active membership in Pax Christi Mohawk Valley, the Romero Group and Call to Action. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Clinton, where she served several terms on the parish council.
Although not a great cook, Pat was an expert with a needle, able to sew, crochet, and embroider skillfully. Her greatest needlecraft love was knitting, and she carried her knitting everywhere, turning out sweaters and scarves for family members and friends. She was a loving wife and mother, a doting grandmother, and an even more doting great-grandmother.
Survivors include four daughters and their spouses: Dr. Maire A. Dugan of Columbia, SC; Darby O’Brien and Kevin Marken of Clinton; Deirdre Dugan and Thomas C. Mammen of Delmar; and Siobhan Dugan of Washington, DC; five grandchildren: Dr. Megan A. In addition to her husband and parents, Pat was predeceased by two children, Frank G. Dugan III in 1996 and Maeve Dugan in 2007; and two brothers, Rev. Kevin F. (Joseph) Fox, OFM, and Rev. Walter J. (Richard) Fox, OFM.
Pat’s family is grateful to the staff at Acacia Village and Hospice and Palliative Care of Oneida, Herkimer and Eastern Madison Counties for their kind and loving care of Pat.
The greatest gift that Pat and Frank gave their children was their love, and they will treasure the memories of their parents for all their lives.
