Obituary of John M. Calcagnino

      Mr. John M. Calcagnino, 75, of Utica, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023.

     John was born in Syracuse, on April 7, 1948 the son of Vito and Fannie (DiMartino) Calcagnino.  He was raised on the northside of Syracuse and was a 1966 graduate of Assumption Academy, where he captained the basketball team.  After attending Onondaga Community College, he joined and served in the US Army Reserves.  For many years, John worked with his father as a cement mason, before venturing out on his own.  He was later a self-employed tavern owner in Syracuse for 8 years.  John moved to Las Vegas in pursuit of business opportunities until his illness, at which time, he moved back to Utica/Upstate NY to be near his son and grandson.  John was an avid NY Yankees, NY Giants and Syracuse University sports fan.

     Mr. Calcagnino is survived by his son, Michael (Lynn) Calcagnino and grandson, Michael R. Calcagnino all of Deerfield, NY; sister, Joyce (Don) Calcagnino of Las Vegas, NV and brother, Michael (Jackie) Calcagnino of N. Syracuse, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was predeceased by his parents, Vito and Fannie.

     In keeping with John’s wishes, there will be no services and a private family burial will be held in Assumption Cemetery in Syracuse. Those wishing to make a donation in John’s memory, please consider the Hospice Siegenthaler Center, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413.

     Mr. Calcagnino’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Staff of the Siegenthaler Center, for the empathy and compassionate care you provided to John in his final months.
