Mr. Edward Rodman Rowan, Jr., 80, of Whitesboro, formerly of Utica, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 25, 2018. Edward was Born on March 6, 1938 in Rahway, New Jersey and attended Rahway Central Schools. He lost his mother, Evelyn Rowan, at the age of 39, on October 9, 1951 when he was just 11 years old. He then spent 2 years in Metuchen, NJ Foster Care until his Maternal Grandmother, Florence Bedman took Ed, his twin brother Herb and his older sister Jane and raised them. Ed enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on June 20, 1956 and spent time in San Antonio and Amarillo, TX until he was sent overseas to Aviano, Italy for 6 months. He completed his enlistment in Myrtle Beach, SC, where he met his best friend and love of his life Sharon Suzanne Simard on June 18, 1960. After discharge from the Air Force, Ed went to work for Republic Aviation in Farmingdale, Long Island. He and Sharon married on January 21, 1961 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. They relocated to Utica in 1962 where Ed went to work for Prudential Insurance Company until 1964, when he formed the Edward R. Rowan Insurance Agency and 5 years later merged with Smith, Trieber and Wittig Inc. On June 4, 1986, he was honored by the State of New York, State Insurance Department, for his work helping local municipalities find liability coverage. He was a member of the Municipal Market Assistance Program through the Professional Insurance Agents of New York State. Ed left Smith, Trieber and Wittig Agency on April 1, 1991 and formed The Rowan Insurance Group in 1992, which is now owned and operated by his son Scott E. Rowan. Ed was a member of Oriskany Whitestown Rotary Club, Since 1970. He had great friends he did projects with and ran many Rotary Programs, Including, “THE GIFT OF LIFE” Program, where 38 children were brought from all Over the WORLD for Heart Surgery. As a result of Ed’s work on this program, through Mike Occupinni (Rome Rotary), he was presented with The Paul Harris Award from his fellow members of the Oriskany-Whitestown Rotary Club in June 2002. Ed lost the love of his life Sharon in March of 2017 when she succumbed to Pneumonia as a result of several health issues. He is Pre-deceased by his twin brother Herbert Rowan, of San Francisco, CA, who died on June 7, 2001 from a brain tumor and his sister-n-law Lynette M. Simard Gluck who died in September of 2006. He is survived by his Children, Mark S. Rowan and wife Tanya of New Hartford, NY. His daughter Renee E. (Rowan) Spielberger and husband Don of Rochester, NY. His son Scott E. Rowan and wife Debbie of New Hartford, NY. His grandchildren Nicholas Rowan of Whitesboro, NY, Matthew Rowan of New Hartford, NY, Eric Rowan of New Hartford, NY and Chloe Rowan of Whitesboro, NY. He spent a lot of time with his grandchildren and found much comfort in them after losing his wife. His sister Jane B. Rodin of Eugene, OR. His Niece Susan and great niece Josie also of Eugene. His Nephews David Gluck of Boise, ID and his children Julian, Noah and Jasper and Steven Gluck of Utica, NY and his children Brianna and Andrew. His lifelong friends Raymond Zyla of New Hartford, NY Donald Schieble of Rome, NY. Along with many, many friends throughout the years. Mr. Rowan’s memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Utica. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the memorial Mass. His Rite of Committal and entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum in Utica.
