Obituary of Michael J. Riscica
We are forever changed, by the loss of our son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, Michael J. Riscica, December 2nd, 2023, after being struck by a car while walking in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Michael was born December 5th, 1972, in New Hartford, New York. He was raised in Utica, during his younger years, moving, with his family, to Deerfield, when he was in middle school. Michael graduated from Whitesboro High School in 1991. While there, he distinguished himself both academically and athletically. Michael played varsity football as a sophomore, through his senior year. He was a valuable member of the team, enjoying a great deal of playing time. He was an outstanding player, and loved, and was loved by, his team. He also excelled at track, a lightning-fast runner. Michael’s academic and athletic performance led him to Ithaca College, where he continued to shine, both in the classroom and on the field. Michael graduated from Ithaca College with a business degree in 1995.
Michael enjoyed engaging with people, hearing their stories and making them smile. For these reasons, his business degree led him to the hospitality industry, where he enjoyed helping individuals and families make memories over meals. As an Italian man, food was a central part of Michael’s life. Michael lived the vast majority of his adult life in Atlanta, Georgia, more recently moving to Plantation, Florida, where his sister, NIcole, resides.
Family was everything to Michael. He enjoyed a close relationship with his mother and siblings, and adored and was very proud of his niece, Brooke and nephew, Harper. Michael, at various times in his life, dealt with some heavy hardships and hurdles, but you would never know it. He never let life get him down, was always upbeat and positive, and had a smile for anyone who needed one.
Michael is survived by his mother, Lorraine Riscica; his brothers, Joseph Riscica and Dean Riscica; his sister, Nicole Riscica and her wife, Leigh; his niece, Brooke Riscica, and nephew, Harper Riscica; and bonus sister, Joleen Riscica. Michael is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins. Although he didn’t see them regularly once moving south, he treasured them all. Michael was blessed by many beautiful friendships. He is also survived by dear friends, Adam Ellis, Christopher Kirkland, Jeff Loach, John Stappenbeck, Michelle Collis and Mike Ridley. Michael was predeceased by his father and confidant, Michael Riscica.
We are broken by the loss of our beloved Michael, but no earthly tragedy can truly take him from us. He is forever in our hearts, giving us the strength to go on, with a smile, for anyone who needs one.
Those who knew and loved Michael are welcome to join us in celebrating his life, during a service at Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, in Utica on Thursday, December 21st, from 4-7pm.
