Obituary of Shirley D. Stomierowski
Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Shirley D. Stomierowski (Turner), joined family and friends in Heaven on Tuesday, November 20, 2018.
She was a lifetime upstate New York resident, born to the late Lt. Col. Jack W. Turner and Jean Turner (Raymond) of Old Forge, NY, on April 19, 1946. Shirley was raised and educated in Old Forge, where growing up she enjoyed close friendships that would last a lifetime, playing music and skiing. She excelled at music and school, playing 1st chair flute in school band, being Organist for Niccolls Memorial Church and graduating Valedictorian of her Town of Webb High School Class of 1964. She married Robert D. Stomierowski in 1965, moved to Utica, and shortly after gave birth to daughter Kari and son Scott. While an early family interrupted her Teaching major at Potsdam State University, her interests in people, teaching, and music sparkled through teaching piano lessons out of the home for years to dozens of local update NY students, concluding each year with an annual piano recital for each student to showcase their talents. Once her children were established in school, Shirley began her career, first with office work in Utica schools, but moving quickly to the insurance business where she would work her way up the ladder, and through college night school and degrees and professional licenses, to eventually thrive in operating her own insurance office for nearly two decades. She spent her early years with State Farm and concluded her last two decades with MetLife, retiring from her New Hartford office. Shirley made many life friends both at work and through work and never stopped caring about each person she met. Over the years, her infamous “family photo tree” of policy holders at work grew to a family of several hundred, covering nearly all the interior walls of the office. Her 38 years marriage to husband Robert were cut short with his passing on July 3, 2003, but through close family and friendships Shirley later enjoyed a decade of fantastic world traveling and great times during retirement. She took pleasure in organizing and participating in charity golf events with friends of “Jackie’s Club” as well as working with lifelong Old Forge friends in organizing class reunions and get togethers. Shirley’s amazing energy, care, generosity, and spirit for life and people will live on forever in the many people she touched over her lifetime.
Her survivors include a brother, Jack (Rebecca) Turner of MI; sister, Brooke (Michael) Watson of CA; daughter, Kari Stomierowski and her husband, Scott Davis, of Cicero, NY; son, Scott and his wife, Kimberly Stomierowski, of Texas; four grandchildren, Kyle and Alaina Davis, and Robert and William Stomierowski; several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service which will be celebrated on Friday, November 30, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., Utica, NY. There are no calling hours. Burial will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Old Forge at the convenience of the family.
