Obituary of Karen M. Drake

    Karen M. Drake, 75, of Utica, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Wynn Hospital with her loving family by her side.

     Karen was born in Utica, on January 23, 1949, the daughter of Raymond and Gladys (Smith) Sutton. She was raised and educated in Utica and was a 1966 graduate of Utica Catholic Academy. Shortly after graduating from high school, Karen moved to NY City where she proudly became a member of The Rockettes. Upon returning to Utica, Karen started the K.D.R. School of Dance in Whitesboro, where she mentored countless children for over 50 years. Karen will be remembered for her unbelievable work ethic and smile. She also enjoyed camping and was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Utica.

     Karen leaves the two most important people in her life, her cherished granddaughter, Hannah Russo of New Hartford and devoted nephew, Bobby (Bridget) Wenner of Deerfield. Also surviving is her son, Michael Russo of Central Square, NY; granddaughter, Hope Russo; great nephew, Bobby Wenner; great niece, Gillian (John) Burger; granddaughters, Katherine Morschauser, Morgan Russo and Mia Russo; her best friend, Elizabeth Morschauser and brother Bill (Dorothy) Sutton, as well as several nieces, nephews and friends to numerous to mention.  Karen also held a special place in heart for her K.D.R/Show Stoppers/Rhythm Lights family, Trails End Campground family, Lloyds Concessions family and ABC Fire Extinguisher Company family. She was predeceased by her parents Raymond and Gladys; sisters, Joann (Robert) Wenner and Trudy (Jack) Devitt and lifelong best friend, Michael Morschauser.

     Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to Karen’s funeral Mass of Christian burial on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes Campus, 2222 Genesee St. Utica. Visitation for family and friends is Monday, (today) June 17^th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica.

     Karen’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff on the 5^th floor west, at Wynn Hospital, as well as Dr. A. Wassel for the loving and compassionate care you provided to her. Your kindness will not be forgotten.
