Mr. Stephen J. Smith, 65, of Marcy, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, on December 2nd at home, with his loving family by his side. 

     Stephen was born in Utica, on August 27, 1959, the son of Frances (LaPorte) Smith. He was raised in Utica, was a graduate of Notre Dame High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Le Moyne College in Syracuse. Stephen furthered his education at SUNY Binghamton where he earned his master’s degree in chemistry. On February 9, 1980, Stephen was united in marriage with Colleen A. Harris at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church in Utica, a loving union of 44 years. For many years, Stephen was employed as an analytical chemist with Indium Corporation in Utica. He also served as an Adjunct Professor at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica and SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Marcy. Stephen was an outdoor enthusiast who loved running, as well as biking, cross-country skiing, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed reading, doing projects around his house and working with his family to build a family camp. He never said no to offering a helping hand with a project. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family and prioritized spending time with his family, watching sporting games, concerts and playing endless board/card Games.

     Stephen is survived by his beloved wife, Colleen; son, Joe Smith of Manlius; daughter and son-in-law, Jess and Ryan Nolan of Marcy; four cherished grandchildren, Carter, Lincoln, Lucas and Madison; one sister and brother-in-law, Judy Smith and Bill Stachowiak of Tarrytown, NY; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Mike and Patty Smith of New Hartford and Tom Smith of Whitesboro; two brothers-in-law, Jim Harris of Steuben, NY and Bill and Lisa Harris of Sauquoit, NY as well as 19 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Frances and sister-in-law, Irene Quiggin.
