Please share a memory of Eleanor to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Eleanor Louise Phillips, 91, of Schuyler, passed away on Saturday, November 21, at Masonic Care Community in Utica. Eleanor was born on January 21, 1924, in Gloversville, NY, the daughter of Richard and Regina (Keller) Ostrom. She attended Gloversville High School and in 1945 graduated from the Nathan Littauer Hospital School of Nursing in Gloversville. After graduation, Eleanor worked as an RN at both the former Utica State Hospital and Marcy State Hospital. She married Burton D. Phillips on May 20, 1946, a loving and devoted union which produced four children and lasted until his death on September 13, 1981. While raising her family, Eleanor also earned a BA degree from SUNY Oneonta. She worked in the first Head Start Program in Utica and went on to teach nursing for 18 years at Utica School for Practical Nursing, Marcy State Hospital School of Nursing and Herkimer County BOCES. Through her work in the community, in area hospitals and later as a teacher, Eleanor touched many peoples’ lives. She was always available to her students for that little bit of extra help outside of class that can make such a big difference. After retirement, Eleanor enjoyed travel with her son, B. Douglas and her sister and brother in law, Ruth and Robert Nelson. She also took up golf and spent many happy times with her “Golf Girls.”
Eleanor is survived by her four children: B. Douglas Phillips, Jr. of Schuyler; David O. Phillips and his wife Mary Ann of Alexandria, Va.; Merrill A. Phillips and his wife Michele of Schuyler; Elizabeth P. Mack and her husband Joseph of Marcy; her loving granddaughter, Kristen Phillips of Schuyler; as well as many nieces and nephews. Eleanor was predeceased by her sister and brother in law Ruth and Robert Nelson.
