Mr. Francis (Frank) C. Zakris, 101, a resident of the Sitrin Health Care Center in New Hartford, formerly of North Utica, passed away on Monday, November 19, 2018 at the nursing home with his loving family by his side. Francis was born in Utica, on March 14, 1917, the son of Anthony and Josephine (Planchunas) Zakris. He was raised and educated in Westmoreland and was a graduate of Westmoreland High School. Frank proudly served in the US Navy during WW II and was a survivor of the Battle of Coral Sea. On June 30, 1956, Frank was united in marriage with Dorothy Kinsella at St. Peter’s Church in N. Utica, a loving and devoted union of 60 years until Dorothy’s death in 2016. At one time, Frank was employed with Revere Copper in Rome and for many years, as a photographer with General Electric Company in Utica, retiring in 1983. Frank enjoyed target shooting, attending Blue Grass Festivals and had a true passion for photography. He was a member of the Utica Camera Club, American Legion Post 1376 in New Hartford and St. Peter’s Church in N. Utica. Mr. Zakris is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Zakris and Christina Zakris both of Utica; two sons, Francis J. Zakris of NY Mills and Marie Dodge of Newport and Paul P. Zakris of NY City; two sisters-in-law, Mae Zakris of Louisiana and Diane Julian of Westmoreland; one brother-in-law, Robert Kinsella of Utica; a dear friend, Mary Wojnas as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Alfred and Ida Zakris and John Zakris and a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Shirley and Harry Otto and Edward Kinsellas. Mr. Zakris’ funeral will be held on Friday, November 23, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Church, 440 Keyes Rd., N. Utica, where his Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the funeral Mass. His Rite of Committal and burial, in St. George’s Cemetery in Whitesboro will be held at the convenience of the family. Mr. Zakris’ family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the rehabilitation unit at the Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center for the wonderful care and compassion you provided to Frank.
