Mr. Erwin Edward Bowen, 83, a resident of the Masonic care Community in Utica, passed away Monday, November 19, 2018 at the nursing home with his loving family by his side. Erwin was born in Utica on July 21, 1935, the son of Preston E. and Gladys (Dziekonski) Bowen. He was raised and educated in Utica and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. Erwin proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. On February 20, 1971, Erwin was united in marriage with Jean L. Gilbraith, a devoted union of 39 years until Jean’s death in 2010. For 15 years, Erwin was employed with Beaunit Fibers in Utica and for many years as a line foreman with Wolfe News in Utica until his retirement. Erwin enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing with his wife and fishing partner Jean. He also played local fast pitch baseball and softball and semi-pro football for the Dodgeville Ramblers. Mr. Erwin is survived by his two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Gail Bowen of N. Utica and Richard and Candy Bowen of Marcy; a brother-in-law, Edward Genter; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sandy and Ted Siesma; one niece, Denise Bowen and five nephews, Richard Bowen and Theresa, Shane and Leanne Bowen, Mike and Yahna Bowen, Edward, Jr. and Lisa Genter and Bobby Bowen; a great niece, Hannah and two great nephews, Garrett and Drew. He was predeceased by his sister Kathleen Genter. Calling hours for family and friends are Saturday morning, November 24, 2018 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica, followed by a prayer service and military honors at 10:00 a.m. at the conclusion of the visitation. His burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica.
