Suzanne Lavin, 79, of Utica passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare. Suzanne was born in Utica on June 16, 1936, a daughter of the late John J. and Marguerite (Snyder) Spohn. She received her education in the Utica Schools. Suzanne was a graduate of St. Joseph School of Nursing in Syracuse, received her BSN Degree from Syracuse University and her Master's Degree from Long Island University-C.W. Post. Suzanne was united in marriage to C. Edward Lavin in Clinton, NY on November 28, 1975 her best friend and great love. She was employed as a Community Mental Health Nurse for the Department of Mental Hygiene at the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center. Suzanne was a Board Member of the ARC of Oneida-Lewis County, Board Member of the Women's Employment Resource Center, President of the Zonta Club of Utica, District 2 Area Director of Zonta International and attended numerous international conferences to focus on improving the status of women worldwide. Suzanne was the recipient of the YWCA Salute to Outstanding Women, Women of Merit Award and the WERC Luminary Award. Sue will be remembered for the joy that she brought to those who knew and loved her. She was charming, warm, kind and a caregiver in every sense of the word. Her devotion to her family and her community was unparalleled. Suzanne is survived by her husband, Edward, her daughter, Karen Bennett and husband Daniel of Bear Creek, NC, a sister, Carol Spohn of Utica, a sister-in-law, Patricia Spohn of Utica a brother-in-law, Ronald Krauss of VA, Edward's children, Patricia Whiting and husband Robert of Albany, Deborah Lavin of Albany, Sharon Lavin-DelVecchio of NJ, Joanne Lavin of MA, Michael Lavin and wife Shelly and their children, Christopher and Eric, dear friend, Barbara Roberts, New Hartford and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Suzanne was predeceased by two sisters, Rosemary Rowlands and Claire Krauss and a brother, John L. Spohn. Mrs. Lavin's funeral will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 9:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 10:00 from Our Lady of Lourdes Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday evening from 4-7. Those so wishing may make donations to the ACR of Oneida-Lewis County or Zonta International in Sue's memory.
