Edward W. Stiefvater, 90, of Marcy passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, July 11, 2015, in the home that he built by hand with his father and brother. Edward was born in Utica on January 22, 1925, a son of the late Edward P. and Freda (Gerstner) Stiefvater. He received his education in Utica, was a 1938 graduate of St. Joseph's Grammar School, a 1942 graduate of Utica Free Academy and graduated Cum Laude from Clarkson College of Technology in 1948 with a degree in chemical engineering. Edward honorably served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946, where he was stationed in Guam and was the proud recipient of 3 medals. He married Betsy Ann Nelson at St. Patrick's Church, Utica in 1948. She passed away in 2010. Edward was employed by Beaunit Fibers as Plant Manager. He then became manager and engineer at Bokem, Inc. After his retirement he worked for his brother's company until the age of 80. Edward was a parishioner of St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church, Utica. Throughout his life Edward enjoyed hunting and fishing, He was a voracious reader of science and technology. At age 68, Ed took up golf, playing in a league with his brother for many years. He was especially proud of a hole-in-one. Ed lived with integrity and was as solid as a rock. He was a devoted family man, a faithful friend, and a true gentleman. Ed's creative problem solving skills and numerous inventions will long be remembered. Edward enjoyed a good Manhattan and was a big fan of Charlie Brown. Edward is survived by his two daughters, Victoria Stiefvater of Piedmont, CA and Vanessa O'Brien and husband Kevin of Quincy, MA, a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Henrietta Stiefvater of Marcy, 3 nieces, Sharon Guley and husband Paul and their children, Patrick and Kevin, Pamela Stiefvater and Lori Pinto and husband Mike and their children, Keith and Sarah, his long time loving partner Diane Hnat, her 5 children and their children who always called Ed grandpa, and Lydia Sarus who became his 3rd daughter and worked for him for 30 years. Mr. Stiefvater's funeral will be held on Friday, July 17, 2015 at 9:15 a.m. from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 10:00 from St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church, Utica, where his Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, Yorkville. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 4-7 p.m. Those so wishing may make donations to a Veterans Charity of their choice. The family wishes to extend thanks to Edward's longtime physicians, Dr Patel, Dr. Culver, and Dr. Fung. The family extends gratitude to Ed's loving caregivers, Judy, Kathy, and Dora. A special thank you to Charlene Werthman and her devoted family who lovingly treated Ed as part of their family.
