Obituary of Robert LeRoy McMahon

Mr. Robert LeRoy McMahon, 90, of Utica passed away on Monday, February 23, 2015 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare in New Hartford with his loving family by his side. Robert was born on May 17, 1924 in Munnsville, NY, the son of Patrick and Alice (Roberts) McMahon. He was raised and educated in Utica, was a graduate of Utica Free Academy and furthered his education through vocational training. In 1964, Robert married the love of his life, Grace M. Tavernese at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church in Utica, a devoted union of 50 years. For 25 years, he was employed with Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome and for over 35 years, with the Utica City School District until his retirement. Robert was a member and Eucharistic Minister at the former Sacred Heart Church in Utica, was a past member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society and was most recently attending Life Tabernacle Church in Utica. He was an active volunteer with many organizations in the Utica area and was extremely generous with providing donations to numerous associations and societies. One of Robert's greatest and proudest accomplishments was the recent publication of his poetry book. Mr. McMahon is survived by his beloved wife Grace; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael McMahon of Maryland and David and Eva McMahon of Rome; three cherished grandchildren, Kayla McMahon, Kierstyn McMahon and her fiancée Shane Young and Josiah McMahon; two adored great grandchildren, Sylvia Roberts and Colin Brough as well as several nieces, nephews and his feline companion, Mr. Kitty. He was predeceased by his sister, Faith Hughes. Mr. McMahon's funeral will be held on Friday, February 27, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica. His burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Whitesboro. Calling hours for family and friends are Thursday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Please omit floral offering and consider the needs of the family.
