Obituary of Gladys A. Landers

Please share a memory of Gladys to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gladys A. (Najda) Landers, formerly of Whitesboro, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 19, 2018 at home in Webster, NY. Gladys was born in Yorkville on January 20, 1926. She was raised and educated in the Yorkville/New York Mills area and attended New York Mills High School. She married Anthony V. Landers in St. Patrick’s Church in Utica on December 27, 1947 and enjoyed a long and loving marriage of 63 years before his death on February 20, 2011. In addition to her husband, she is also predeceased by her son Brian, great-granddaughter Lauren, her brothers Frank and Edward Najda, and sister Frances Trapp. Like millions of other females of that era, she was employed during WWII but once she and “Anth” married, she reveled in being a “stay at home mom” as she raised her 4 children - Pat, Mike, Kit, and Brian. Her favorite pastimes were embroidery and gardening. She and her husband also loved to go dancing at the various social functions at Sacred Heart Church, where they were parishioners for many years. Following the death of her youngest son, she and Anthony moved to Webster, NY to live with their son and his wife. She is survived by her son Patrick (Trish) of Webster, Michael (Kristine) of Fairfax Station VA, and daughter Kathleen (Brian) Hughes of Port Orchard WA; eleven grandchildren: Scott Landers, Ryan & Beth Landers, Shaun & Lisa Landers, Michael Landers, Megan & Patrick Toland, Timothy Landers, Gavin & Brandi Hughes, Jared & Grace Hughes, Matthew & Amy Landers, Danny Landers, and Zak Landers; thirteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Although her physical abilities declined with advancing age, she loved and relished her role as Matriarch for the family, staying in touch with her children and grandchildren on a weekly basis from the comfort of her upstairs living room chair. Despite her age, she was always “on point” with her observations and guidance. The feedback received from the grandchildren during her final days is a lasting testimony to the loving impact and lasting memories that she (and “Gramps”) left on their young lives many years ago that they still hold dear today. On Wednesday, October 24, a two-hour viewing will be held from 1030 AM-1230 PM at the Heintz Funeral Home on Whitesboro Street in Utica, followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 1PM at St. Mary’s Church in New York Mills. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to your favorite charity in her memory.
