William Quinn, 95, of Washington Mills, NY died on Monday, December 29, 2014. Bill was born December 14,1919, in Whitesboro, NY, the fourth child of John and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Quinn, William Francis (Bill) Quinn was a veteran, an insurance executive, a musician, and self-taught carpenter. He built with his own hands the family home in Washington Mills. Bill married Elizabeth (Betty) Seubert of Utica, NY, on March 3, 1945 in Childress, TX. They were married for 66 years, until her death on March 29, 2011. He graduated from Whitesboro High School in 1937, he served in the US Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945. Stationed in Texas, he was a bombardier instructor until his discharge as a 1st Lieutenant, following V-J Day. Bill was employed by Utica Mutual Insurance Company in 1939, starting in the mail room and progressing to underwriting. Following World War II he resumed employment at Utica Mutual, working in a number of positions, concluding with assignments in the Eastern Regional Office, National Accounts, and Graphic Arts Mutual, a Utica Mutual subsidiary in New York City. He retired in 1982. His work at Utica Mutual was discontinuous, as he was a State Farm Insurance agent for several years in the 1960s. A lifelong musician, Bill studied trumpet with "Prof. Myers," working in his music store to pay for lessons. He played professionally at age 15, performing with many area bands and groups over the years, playing well into his 80's. He was a sideman in bands led by, among others, Andy Jenson, Hib Williams, Ray Dimitrich, Ted Radley, Jud Smith, Tom Flynn, and John Charas. In later years, Bill enjoyed watercolor painting, cross country skiing, afternoon concerts, playing piano in nursing homes, and writing for the Whitesboro Historical Society and the Dunham Library Creative Writing Group. Bill was predeceased by his five siblings: Leo (Anna) Quinn, Dorothy (Bernard) McLaughlin, John (Raquel) Quinn, Marion (Paul) Hamlin, and Joseph (Virginia) Quinn. Bill and Betty are survived by their children: Thomas (Julie) Quinn of Syracuse, NY; Peter (Connie Rudolph) Quinn, Nashville, TN; and Kathleen (Joseph Matus) Quinn, Canandaigua, NY; three grandchildren, Shaman (Cynde) Quinn of Cody, WY; Solon Quinn, Syracuse, NY; and Meaghan (Brandon) Krazinski, Syracuse, NY; and their dear neighbors Arlene "A" Cieko Thurlow, Roseanne Delmedico Blunt, and Sandy Raciti. Donations may be made to The Seigenthaler Center of Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. or to St. John the Evangelist Church. Mr. Quinn's funeral will be held on Friday, January 2, 2015 at 9:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 10:00 from St. John The Evangelist Church, New Hartford. Burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Yorkville. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 2-4.
