Paul J. West, Sr., 82, of Whitesboro, passed away Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Paul was born in Weirton, West Virginia on January 3, 1932, the son of Frank A. and Elizabeth (Ulrich) West. After graduating high school, he served his country with the US Air Force for twenty years, including the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring from service in 1972 with the rank of Master Sergeant. In 1960, Paul married Rita Tobin at Sacred Heart Church in Utica, sharing a union of over fifty years, until her passing in 2011. Following his military service, Paul was employed with the Utica Psychiatric Center, retiring in 1996. He had been a member of the Molson Jones VFW Post #7393, the New Hartford American Legion Post # 1376, and for many years, served as an usher with the former Sacred Heart Church in Utica. Paul was an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. Paul is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Paul, Jr. and Kelly West, New York Mills, NY, Frank and Julie West, Marion, NY, Kevin and Sherri West, Wheatfield, NY; six grandchildren, Alexis, Paul III, Morgan, Brooke, Connor, and Sean. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Stella Tobin, Utica, and Molly Tobin, Utica, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He is predeceased by a brother, Robert West; two sisters and three brothers-in-law, Lois Layton, Margaret and Buck Adams, James Tobin and Richard Tobin. Mr. West's funeral services will be announced in the spring. Arrangement are entrusted to the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica. Those wishing may donate to the American Kidney Foundation in Paul's memory.
