Betty J. Doty Schaaf, 84, of Yorkville passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at the St. Luke's Home surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born in Utica on September 8, 1930 a daughter of Anthony and Mary (Entwistle) Doty. She was a 1948 graduate of Utica Free Academy. In Utica on September 10, 1949 Betty married Kenneth W. Schaaf, a blessed union of 65 years. For many years Betty was employed with the Red Barn, Fanny Farmers, and retired from Eckerds Drugs Store. She was a parishioner of St. Paul's Church, Whitesboro. She was a long time member of the "Girls", YWCA, and the Broadway Theatre League. Betty loved visiting casinos having traveled to Las Vegas and Atlantic City. In her spare time Betty enjoyed knitting and sewing and will be especially remembered for her specialty in making beautiful Christmas Stockings. Betty is survived by her husband, Ken, her three children, Gail Geer and husband Dennis, Whitesboro, Lauri Schaaf and Steve Toepp, Utica and Michael Schaaf and wife Kimberly, Town of Marshall, six grandchildren, Danielle Martell and husband Dominick, Utica, Justin Geer, NYC, Chelsea Rose and husband Matt, New Hartford, Logan Schaaf, NJ, Ashley VanHatten, Yorkville, and Ian Schaaf, Clinton, two great grandsons, Dominick and Nathan, a sister, Carol Cahill, Utica, in-laws, Douglas and Pauline Schaaf, Donald and Marilyn Schaaf and Donald Parda many nieces, nephews and special friends especially the "Club Girls" Lois Comte and Isabelle Rahn. Betty was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Anne and George Yaehrling, a brother, Donald Doty and a sister-in-law, Lois Parda. A special thank you for the love and care given to Betty by the Barton West staff of the St. Luke's Home. Mrs. Schaaf's funeral will be held on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 10:45 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 11:30 from St. Paul's Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will take place in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday (Today) from 4-7 and Friday from 9:45 - 10:45. Those so wishing may make donations to the Diabetes Association or the Cancer Society in Betty's memory.
