Obituary of Sybil J. Hahn
Please share a memory of Sybil to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sybil J. Hahn, 85, of New York Mills, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, on July 30, 2014, following a lengthy illness. Sybil was born on March 12, 1929 in Rome, the daughter of Louis and Lydia (Schmocker) Werren. She graduated from Utica Free Academy and then worked at the First Bank and Trust of Utica. Sybil married her high school sweetheart, Donald R. Hahn on August 25, 1951 at Sacred Heart Church in Utica. Their union blessed them with six children, whom they raised together at their home in New York Mills. Sybil was extremely proud of the fact that, at age 40, she learned to play the organ under the instruction of Stephen Best. It was then that she embarked on a new career as an organist, playing for numerous churches throughout the Utica area, including the Catholic churches: Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Thomas Church of New Hartford and the former St. Ann's Church of Whitesboro, as well as churches of other denominations. Sybil was a proud member of the A. G. O. (American Guild of Organists). Sybil is survived by her husband of nearly 63 years, Don Hahn of New York Mills, their six children, Karen (Paul) Wagner of New Hartford, Kathleen (Richard) Maloney of Utica, Kristine (John) Hoffman of Wallingford, CT, Donald (Sue) Hahn of Whitesboro, Stephen (Jacquelyn) Hahn of New Hartford and Karl (Kristin) Hahn of Rome; her grandchildren, Kristine, Matthew, Kimberly, Mark, Michael, Kerry, Lauren, Erin, Meghan, Bryan, Nicole, Leanne, Vanessa, Elizabeth and Sarah; her great-grandchildren, Bryanna, Katherine and Nathan; a sister Mildred Todd of New Hartford, a brother Paul Werren of Utica, and several nieces and nephews. Sybil was predeceased by her siblings, Lydia Gilbert, who passed away last November and Hildegard Wallace. Mrs. Hahn's funeral will be held on Monday, August 4, 2014 at 11:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St, Utica and at 12:00 at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, New Hartford, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Yorkville. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 4 - 7. The family wishes to extend their thanks and gratitude to the staff at the Siegenthaler Center for the care they provided to Sybil and her family in her final days and to her physicians, Dr. Sloan and Dr. Butala.
