Mrs. Eleanor M. Gallagher, 94, a resident of St. Joseph Nursing Home, Utica, formerly of Eagle St., Utica, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at the nursing home. Eleanor was born in Flint, Michigan on June 25, 1920 the daughter of William and Zita (Geer) Leach. She was raised locally and was a member of the first graduating class of Thomas R. Proctor High School. On July 11, 1942, Eleanor married Edward M. Gallagher at St. Mary's Church in Utica, a loving union of 66 years, until Edwards death in 2008. For many years, Eleanor assisted her husband with his Nationwide Insurance Business. Eleanor was a member of the former St. Mary's Church in Utica until it's closure, and was a member of the Christ Child Society. She enjoyed knitting, especially items for the Christ Child Society, taking walks and spending time at the family cottage on Lake Ontario. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family whom she loved dearly. Mrs. Gallagher is survived by her three beloved children; Michael A. Gallagher and his fiancée, Patricia Russell of Whitesboro, Gregory E. Gallagher of Whitesboro and Bridget E. Gallagher and her husband Stephen Smith of Boulder, CO; 5 cherished grandchildren, Michael E. Gallagher and his wife Shana of Clayville, Christopher J. Gallagher and his wife Ursula of Indian Lake, NY, Heather A. Gallagher-Jewett of Herkimer, Rory Smith of Denver, CO and Patrick Smith of NY City; 4 adored great grandchildren, Danny, Meghan, Sophia and Hunter as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Carol E. Gallagher. Mrs. Gallagher's funeral will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Whitesboro, where her Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Her rite of Burial and committal will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Utica. Calling hours for family and friends are Wednesday (today) from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica.
