James D. Harris, 92, a resident of St. Luke's Home, formerly of Utica and Forestport, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2014 at the nursing home. James was born April 23, 1922 in Utica, the son of James and Irene (Jones) Harris. He was raised and educated in Utica. On December 13, 1941, James married Anna Mae Heidelberger in Utica, sharing a union of nearly 55 years until her passing in 1996. He and his brother, Dalton William Harris, served their country with the Army Air Corps during World War II. Dalton was killed during the war. Jim was employed as the Head Cook with the Utica Psychiatric Center. Jim made his home in West Utica and would spend his summers in Forestport. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as playing golf and baseball. Jim is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Irene and James Quiggan, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Colleen and Stephen Smith, Marcy; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Harris, Jr., Steuban, William and Lisa Harris, New Hartford. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and several great, great grandchildren. Mr. Harris' funeral services, entrusted to the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica, will be held privately at the convenience of the family. A private interment will be held in Carr Cemetery, Marcy. There is no public visitation. Those wishing may donate to the American Red Cross in Jim's memory. The family would like to offer their thanks and heartfelt appreciation to the nurses and staff of the St. Luke's Home, especially Barton North, for the care and kindness given to Jim during his stay.
