BARNEVELD-John A. Hammill, age 77, of Barneveld, passed away April 10, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with cancer, at home, with his family by his side. John was born July 24, 1936. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Eva Hammill. He was married to Irene C. Chwalek, on May 21, 1955, for fifty nine blessed years. Together they had seven children. John was the pillar of his immediate and extended family. He found great joy spending time with his seven children, fifteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, relatives and friends. He was adored by all who came to know him. His wit and dry sense of humor were a unique and an integral part of his personality. He spent many summers vacationing and boating in the Thousand Islands with his family. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and brother-in-law George. He was a talented cook, and his signature dishes included "Uncle John's Potatoes" and his seafood lasagna. He was an avid reader and a history buff. He rarely missed a Saturday night poker game and looked forward to his trips to Salamanca and Jamestown, New York. He had been involved in the taxi business for fifty-five years, opening City Cab, Inc. in August, 2000. He was also employed for many years at F.X. Matt Brewery. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. John is survived by his beloved wife, Irene; three sons, John Hammill and Christina Mozzetti (Hinckley), Michael Hammill and Sherry Taylor (Barneveld), Joseph Hammill and Kelly Egresitis (Barneveld); four daughters, Deborah and Marco Indolfi (Floyd), Christine and Richard Furlong (Holland Patent), Cynthia and Paul Falk (Floyd), Cheryl and Gregg Sebastian (Barneveld); his grandchildren, Richard (Sara) Furlong, Christopher Indolfi, Danielle (Adam) Meyers, John (Danielle) Furlong, David (Valerie) Indolfi, Gregg (Michelle) Sebastian, Michelle Furlong, Michael (Sebrina) Sebastian, Brian (Jolene) Indolfi, Joshua Sebastian, Elise (Joel) Hammill, Alessandra Hammill, Matthew Hammill, Stephen Falk, Jayde Hammill; Step-grandchildren, Devin, Caryne, John, Jenicia, Essance, Alexis; Great Grandchildren, Gregg, Natalie, Emma, Amelia, Jacksen, Ethan, Henry, Ella, Genivieve, Saraiya; a Sister, Jayne Zammiello (Utica); Brothers-in-law and Sister-in-law, Anthony DeJoseph (Jamestown), George and Elaine Retschle (Utica). John was also survived by many nieces, nephews and close friends, including Michael Zalewski; and his faithful canine companion, Willie. He is predeceased by brothers and sisters, Floyd Hammill, Sally DeJoseph, Patrick Hammill, Marcia Retschle; Brothers-in-law, Kenneth Zammiello, Arthur Chwalek; and Mother-in-law, Anastasia "Stella" Chwalek. Mr. Hammill's funeral service will be held Monday, April 14, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica. His burial will be at Holland Patent Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be from 3 - 5 pm, Sunday afternoon. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Joel Sainsbury for his support and compassion during John's illness. They would also like to extend their gratitude to Hospice and particularly a special thank you to Laurie Sutherland, a long time friend of the family, for her caring support.
