Raymond J. Greene, 96, of the Luther Care Home and formerly of Deerfield, NY, passed away on February 12, 2014. Raymond was born in Utica on February 10, 1918, the son of Joseph Isadore (Grzywinski) and Agnes Veronica (Groutkowski) Gross Greene. He was raised in West Utica, Floyd Street, and graduated from St. Joseph Parochial School and Utica Free Academy. In 1942 Raymond joined the US Navy and began his naval training at Newport, RI, and was assigned to the U.S.S. William P. Biddle. Raymond was later assigned to the Naval Intelligence Command and the Amphibious Command HDQ in Norfolk, VA where he was the personal driver for Admiral Kirk, and finally served at the NTC Lido Beach, NY. After receiving his Honorable Discharge, his employment included the Continental Can Co. in Rome, NY followed by the Bendix Fluid Division in Utica, where he retired after 30+ years as a government certified welder. On December 9, 1950, Raymond married Mabel Marie Johnson in the Moriah Presbyterian Church in Bronx, NY, a blessed union of 49 years until Mabel's passing in 2000. Raymond was a founding member and Trustee of the Historic First Baptist Church of North Utica. He was a member and past Treasurer of the United Steel Workers Union Local #4831, N.Y.S. Federation of Steel Workers, VP and Treas. of S.O.A.R., (Steel Workers of America Retirees) and member of the Utica Chapter of the American Red Cross. In his early years Raymond was with the BSA Revolutionary Council (Utica) as a Boy Scout and later a Troop Leader. Raymond was an avid gardener. He spent much of his free time enjoying his camp at Northwoods Lodge on Lake Pleasant, NY. He was a winter sports enthusiast who enjoyed skiing, speed skating and snowmobiling. Raymond is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Larry Acquaviva of Seoul, South Korea, two grandchildren, Crystal Rose Acquaviva of Sudbury, England and Chris James Acquaviva of Seoul, South Korea. Raymond was also predeceased by his son, Robert John Greene in 1987, his brother, Norbert T. Greene and his sister, Marcella Greene. Mr. Greene's funeral with Military Honors will be held on Monday, February 24, 2014 at 10:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica and at 11:00 from the Historic First Baptist Church of North Utica. Burial will take place immediately following in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Saturday from 2-5 & Sunday from 2-5. Those so wishing may make donations to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, BSA Troop #59 of Deerfield, NY of the Deerfield Volunteer Fire Dept. or the Stevens-Swan Humane Society. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Luther Care Home for the care and friendship extended to Raymond.
