Mary Spring Steele, 51, of Tunkhannock, PA, passed away on December 31, 2013, after a valiant effort against breast cancer, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born on March 8, 1962 to Dr. Paul and the late Mary Jo (Gretchen) Spring in Utica. Mary had a deep compassion for nature and animals and cared for and saved many of God's creatures. She was kind and generous to those she met. She was known for her beautiful smile and loving ways. Mary had a passion for holistic care and wellness. Mary graduated from Notre Dame High School and received her BSRN degree from Niagara University. She was a Board Certified Holistic RN, and also received her Masters' in Holistic Nutrition. She was a Certified Shiatsu practitioner, Certified Chi Gong instructor, and a member of the American Holistic Nurses' Association. Mary was a second-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do Karate and along with her husband, Bruce Steele, operated UTA Karate, Dalton, PA. In addition to her loving husband, surviving Mary are her father and stepmother, Dr. Paul and Alice Spring; devoted siblings, Paul (Kathy) Spring of Memphis, TN, Susan (Thomas) Spring Keeler of Utica, NY, Jennifer Spring Ed.D. of New Hartford, NY, and Aimee (Robert) Spring-Cecil of New Paltz, NY; stepdaughter, Terra (Dr. Joseph) Steele McAuliffe and their children Jillian and Ronan; and mother-in-law Nona Steele. Mary is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews, Christopher Spring (New Hartford), Dr. Brittanny Jo Keeler (Buffalo), Shauna E. Keeler (Syracuse University), Brennan Keeler (NYC), Mackenzie Wallace (Washington, D.C.), Aaron Wallace (Cornell University), Ian Wallace (New Hartford), Hollie Spring Candido and Brayton Cecil (New Paltz, NY). Mary also leaves her beloved uncle, Tom Gretchen of Canandaigua and uncle and aunt/Godmother, Dr. John and Donna Spring of Burnt Hills and their children and families, along with many dear friends. Mary cherished her dog, Maya, and cats, Jasmine and Serena. At. one time, she was married to Dr. J. Teigport. A special mention of thanks to longtime family friend Kathleen deLalla. There will be a mass in Mary's memory on Saturday, January 4 at 11:30 at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church, 702 Columbia St., Utica. Father Anthony LaFache, Mary's former high school religion teacher, will officiate at the mass. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the service.
