Obituary of Mark J. Waterman

- Mark J. Waterman, 77, of Utica, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center, New Hartford, after a brief illness. Mark was born April 18, 1936 in Utica, NY, the son of Edwin G. and Helen (Burns) Waterman. He was raised and educated in Utica, graduating from Utica Free Academy. Mark served his country with the US Navy from 1956 - 1958. On April 20, 1963, Mark married Josephine Sgroi at St. Agatha's Church in Canastota. Mrs. Waterman passed away in 2009. He was employed with the New York State Dept. of Mental Health, retiring in 1990 after 30 years. He then went on to work for Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, retiring from there in 2000. Mark was a longtime member of the Yorkville Fire Dept. He coached minor and little league baseball in Yorkville. He will always be remembered by his family and friends as a hardworking and faithful provider for his family, a loving husband, father and grandfather and a tremendously kind, generous and compassionate individual. Mark was a member of St. Joseph & St. Patrick's Church in Utica. Mark is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Eric Hinkston, Rochester, NY; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark, Jr. and Theresa Waterman, New York Mills, Stephen and Jarren Waterman, Rome; five grandchildren, Joseph (and his wife, Brittany), Jessica, Jacob, Alex, and Cara. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Milioto, Syracuse, Margaret Waterman, Utica; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Neil and Margaret Waterman, Whitesboro, William and Phyllis Waterman, Westmoreland; and a special friend, Elaine Gaffney, Whitesboro. He is predeceased by one son, Daniel; five sisters, Claire, Colleen, Paula, Helen and Ann; two brothers, George and Peter. Mr. Waterman's funeral will be held on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 10:30 am at St. Joseph & St. Patrick's Church where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment, with Military Honors, will take place in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Whitestown, at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica, Thursday evening, from 4 - 7 pm. Those wishing may donate to the Yorkville Fire Department in Mark's memory. The family extends their sincere thanks and heartfelt appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Oncology Unit of Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center for the care and kindness shown to Mark and his family.
