Obituary of Walter J. St. John

Walter J. St. John, 89, a resident of the St. Luke's Home, New Hartford, formerly of Deerfield, passed away Friday, March 15, 2013 at the nursing home. Walter was born in Yorkville, NY on September 19, 1923, the son of Windsor and Odella (Suprenant) St. John. He was raised and educated locally and when on to serve his country with the US Army. On May 20, 1950, Walter married Helen J. Gorton in Utica. Mrs. St. John passed away in 1994. Walter was employed with Borden, delivering milk for several years before going on to TriState Laundry in Utica for over 30 years, until his retirement in 1984. He had been a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Post # 97, the American Legion Post # 229, North Utica, the Am-Vets in Yorkville, and was an avid golfer right up until the last few years. Walter was a member of St. Peter's Church in North Utica. Walter is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Candy and Joseph Oczkowski, Deerfield; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Sandy St. John, Marcy; 9 beloved grandchildren, Alicia Cashman, Michele (& Michael) Husnay, Julie (& Michael) Murawski, Jennifer Fell, Debi (& James) Day, Jamie St. John, Theresa Miller, Rachael (& Eric) Hall, and Amy (& Shawn) Preble as well as fifteen cherished great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Also surviving is one brother, Howard St. John, Forestport and one sister-in-law, Mary Ellen St. John, NJ; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by one sister, Theresa Norton; and four brothers, Raymond, Leo, Eugene, and Fr. Norman St. John. A Memorial Mass will take place for Mr. St. John on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 10:00 am at St. Peter's Church in North Utica. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery will take place at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a mercy meal following the Mass at the Eagles Club Post #97. Arrangements are entrusted to the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica. Those wishing may donate to the Deerfield Fire Dept. or to the Ronald McDonald House in Walter's memory.
