Obituary of Barbara A. McKernan

Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Barbara Ann (Morehead) McKernan passed away on March 12, 2013 from complications from diabetes at the age of 69. Barb was born in Highland Park MI on March 20, 1943, the daughter of the late Edwin Lloyd and Murial Ann (Wasilevich) Morehead. She spent her early years in Southfield, MI, where she graduated from Southfield High School in 1961. In 1964 she married Daniel McKernan and moved to Detroit, MI. In 1969, the family, which now included a daughter, Barbara Lynn, moved to Deerfield, NY. During her working years, Barb was a store manager at Hickory Farms and a teller at Homestead Savings and Loan. She was an avid bowler in her spare time, taking the time to become an instructor for young bowlers. During her later years, she took up golfing, enjoying that sport tremendously, travelling extensively with Daniel and her friends, going to Turning Stone Casino, and playing pitch. But her biggest accomplishment was in being an excellent wife to Daniel and mother to the couple's two children. Unlike many modern parents, she stayed at home when the children were young, so that she could spend as much time as possible with them during their formative years. She is survived by her husband, Daniel McKernan of Deerfield, her children, Barbara Lynn McKernan(Michael Bush), of Whitesboro, and James Edwin McKernan (Gina), of Frankfort, and her grandchildren, Michael James Bush, Haley and Jillian McKernan, whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by a sister and brother in law, Edith and Don Zerilli of MI. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, Gertrude Morehead and Ellen Anderson, and a aunt and uncle, Olga and Fritz Babula. Mrs. McKernan's funeral service will be held Thursday evening, March 14, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N.Utica. Her calling hours will be from 4:00 until 7:00 prior to her service. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery, Whitesboro, NY. The Family would like to thank the Doctors at Slocum Dickson Medical Group for their dedication to Barbara's care. We would also like to thank the caregivers at the Presbyterian Home, all of whom became family. A special thanks to Julie, Lauren, Christine, and Polly for all of their care. We would also like to thank the nurses and caregivers at St. Luke's Hospital, Allen Calder Wing 2W especially Taylor and Loretta. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to The Presbyterian Home for CNY.
