John P. Mehaffy, 72, of Schuyler, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013 at his home with his family by his side. John was born in Utica on April 13, 1940, the son of Morris and Rita (Jenner) Mehaffy. He was raised and educated in Utica, graduating from Utica Free Academy. On May 12, 1979, John married Kathryn Kistner in Utica. He was employed at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center. John enjoyed shooting pool and bird watching. John is survived by his wife, Kathryn Mehaffy, Schuyler; a daughter, Gail Schmoke, Taberg; a son, James Mehaffy, Whitesboro; two stepdaughters, Michele Plourde, Cold Brook, Gina DiDonato, Saratoga Springs; three stepsons, Christopher Kistner, Utica, John Kistner, New York Mills, Jeffrey Kistner, Portsmouth, VA; fourteen grandchildren, Jennifer, David, Caleb, Ryan, Kyle, Steven, Jeffrey, Nicole, Allison, Haley, Arianna, Aden, Charles, and Emma; and three great grandchildren, Aurora, Christina, and Alexa. He is also survived by one sister, Jean Dullin, Westmoreland; and one brother, Richard Mehaffy, Boca Raton, FL. He is predeceased by a brother, Donald Mehaffy. Mr. Mehaffy's funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 4:00 pm at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon, from 1 - 4 pm, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. in John's memory.
