Edward V. Buckley, 91, of Clinton, our husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, finished his race on Saturday, March 2, 2013. Ed was born in Clinton, NY on August 8, 1921, the son of Daniel Edward and Rose Etta (Cunning) Buckley. He was raised in Clinton and a 1939 graduate of Clinton Central School, and later attended Syracuse University and Utica College. Ed proudly served his country with the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. On September 10, 1949, Ed married his biggest fan, coach, manager, and the love of his life, Dorothy Dignan at St. Mary's Church in Clinton. He was employed with Western Electric and later with Griffiss Air Force Base Rome Air Development Center for 35 years as an electronics engineering technician at the Verona Test Site, retiring in 1979. Ed was a parishioner of St. Mary's Parish as well as a member of St. Mary's Church Choir. He was a member of many organizations, including the Helmuth-Ingalls American Legion Post # 232, the Schilling-Burns-Young VFW Post # 9591, Clinton Kiwanis Club, the Roman Runners, the Utica Road Runners, the Syracuse Chargers Track Club, the World Masters Cross Country Ski Organization, USA Track and Field; an avid runner and cross country skier, he competed in many road races locally, nationally and internationally. He was a volunteer and former Board member and Treasurer of the Friends of the Lutheran Home, a volunteer with the American Red Cross, a member of the Board of Directors of the Kirkland Sports Hall of Fame and the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame, and an inductee of both and also an inductee of the Clinton Central School Foundation Hall of Distinction, and also received many sports and civic awards. A proud veteran, Ed would be seen placing American flags around the Clinton Village Green on every holiday for 50 years, as well as placing flags on the graves of veterans in local cemeteries for many years. Ed is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Buckley, Clinton; six children and their spouses, Barbara and Patrick Grimes, Clinton, Patrick and Carolyn Buckley, New Hartford, Michael and Andrea Buckley, New Hartford, Eileen and John Noti, Oriskany Falls, Paul and Judy Buckley, Scotia, NY, Kate and Conrad Pilson, Boston, MA; eighteen beloved grandchildren, Stephanie, Todd, Ellen, Chris, Jamie, Jenny, Karen, Kevin, Matt, Andy, Jason, Dan, Eric, Mark, Shane, Robbie, J.J., and Patrick; twenty cherished great grandchildren, Maddie, Taryn, Miller, Maya, Clara, Emma, Maggie, Brigid, Seamus, Eoin, Jerome, Santino, Brayden, Bryce, JohnArif, Nadim, Glenn, Selena, Marcus and Angie. Also surviving is one dear sister, Blanche Rose Greene, Greene, NY, sisters-in-law, Rita Halfmann and Carol McPherson, both of Clinton, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. Besides his parents, Ed is predeceased by a brother, John Buckley, and sisters, Evelyn Buckley, Eleanor Garrett, Marjorie Wright, Elizabeth Hullar, and Sarah Schachtler. Mr. Buckley's funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Church in Clinton where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Private interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton, Tuesday evening, from 4 - 7 pm. The Helmuth-Ingalls American Legion Post # 232 will conduct their service at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to St. Mary's Church or to Helmuth-Ingalls American Legion Post # 232 or Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. in Ed's memory. The family expresses their gratitude and appreciation to Ed's special caregivers, Katie, Evie, Brooke, Lilly, Edna, Gloria, Lisa, and Fike.
