ROME, NY – Lyle Blackmere Martin, Jr., 59, of Rome, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2017, at the St. Luke’s Home, New Hartford. Lyle was born on April 11, 1957, in Utica, the son of Lyle Blackmere and Lucy F. (Clardy) Martin. He was raised and educated in Schuyler. Lyle was employed with the City of Rome as a truck mechanic. He also worked with Al’s Cycles in Rome. On September 20, 1985, Lyle married Valerie L. Spear in the Church of Christ, Utica, sharing a union of over 31 years. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Utica, as well as the Harley Rendezvous Staff for 27 years. Lyle was a motorcycle enthusiast, who enjoyed riding, building, and working on them. He was generous with his mechanical talents, always willing to help others. Lyle and Val worked diligently for the Third Option and Retrovie marriage programs for the Good News Center for several years. Lyle is survived by his beloved wife, Valerie L. Martin, Rome; one daughter, Lanee V. Martin, Rome; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jeremy and Vicki Ruffule, Herkimer, Aaron and Colleen Smith, Florida, Adam G. and Michel Smith, Nevada; six grandchildren, Julian and StellaBlue Ruffule, Matthew, Joshua, and Gabby Smith, and Zachary Smith; two sisters, Rose Beard, Whitesboro, Judy Cooper, Pennsylvania; one brother, Charlie Martin, Vernon; as well as by several dear nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a sister, Millie Hansler. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Martin on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 6:30 pm at the Church of Christ, 1330 Herkimer Rd., Utica.
